The amount of the same item sold so far?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed the scam eBay are trying to pull off but I see on plenty of listings it shows that the seller has already sold x amount of the item in question and an example is 700 sold so far with more than 10 available.

But when I go through the sellers sold items the seller has only sold 1 item and not 700 lol.

So eBay are showing that the item has sold in huge quantity just to encourage a buyer to buy it when in fact it's a con.

I think the point some were trying to make was that the listing wasn't always as you see it. It may have started 10 years ago being a listing for cardboard boxes. Over that 10 years, people bought 699 of the boxes and the seller then ran out. Instead of restocking his boxes, he decided to make the listing into a new release, limited edition t-shirt and has since sold 1. As it's still the original listing that was never ended, it now appears that he's sold 700 t-shirts, not 699 boxes and 1 t-shirt.

If that is the case then I am disappointed as I have always assumed that if a listing says eg 7 available, 10 sold, that it applies to that seller for that exact item.

I couldn't really care how many are sold except in the sense that if it shows a seller has sold quite a few of them and the seller has eg a 100% rating, you assume people have been happy with that item.

That's the impression a buyer would get, without looking at individual feedback.

If those figures don't relate exactly to that seller and that item, then they're useless. And misleading.
