this happened to my daughter, what would you do
she purchased 3 separate small items that was $4.00 each with free postage that went into a large letter $1.40 very light weight .
now what would you do as a seller they can all fit and weigh in a large letter under the 125g weight would you send it in 1 large letter or separately or send it in 1 large letter and give a refund for postage or no refund

All our items are listed as FREE post.
When buyers purchase multiple items they typically do so in multiple transactions as well.
This costs us an extra 30-cents for each additional transaction when paid via PayPal.
So we will typically combine them into a single package if they will fit, otherwise more than one. Or even into a 500-gram satchel if the order is large enough. We can and do decide how we mail it out.
We usually don't refund any postage cost difference as the listing says FREE. The buyer sees that up front. Nobody has ever asked us the question will there be a discount on postage for multiple items. As posted above by DG there is no discount mecahnism available via ebay invoicing anyway when items are listed as FREE psotage.
If asked do we do discount for bulk orders then that is a different matter and we will negotiate a price that way.
Sometimes if a buyer buys enough multiple items, say over $50 worth, and they pay in a single transaction we will include an extra bonus item or two for them. Normally we get back good feedback and/or a thank you note for that.
We have never had any complaints along these lines, this is just the way we handle this situation.

its not hypothetical at all , its straight forward only 3 answeres send separate or send in thesame 1 package or refund difference for combined postage. if you cant say 1 of those dont reply . i have never said at this stage whats right or wrong i am after some opinions on what would you do also your point about sellers price things for multiple goods is not the case 3 complete different items ,i never said they were the same

Postage was free so what refund are you suggesting the sellers gives?

Throw it to me - throw it to me - throw it to me.

It is a trick question.

You said it in your OP
And refund the buyer what?
It was free postage so it's whether the seller is going to save money by sending all in one parcel or seperately, nothing to do with the buyer.

That's because you can't. Newsflash - you are not the arbiter of moral justice.
If you tried to, you would be thinking you have the right to judge another seller's business model, and you don't have anywhere near enough information (not to mention the right) to do that. Surely you've been in business long enough by now to realise that not everyone will (or even can) have a business model that 100% mirrors your own practices and expectations.
And by the way, my posts are on topic, and I can choose if and how I respond, as well as what I respond to.
Edited to add - and really joe, why does it even matter what another seller would do. If you can accept that ebay's practices are ok no matter what and you just have to deal with their decisions, why can't you do the same for other sellers, hmmmm?

how is the seller suppose to refund the difference if its "free postage", or are you diliberatly trying to antaginise people?
