What happens if i get a negative feedback for my first sale

Hi everyone.

I started selling some things on a selling account and i had my first sale. The payment was sent to me at night and i posted it in the morning. Free express postage. I left them feedback to say thank you and immediately told them the parcel was sent and gave them the express number. This was only on tuesday. They msged me on Thursday to tell me it better show up by today which is friday, because they need it for the weekend.

Why does my buyer think their parcel is going to arrive across the country in 2 days? I don't understand because i never said that was possible and i was never asked if that was possible, if i had of been asked i would of told them not to risk it. I would assume that anyone who shops online would never think a parcel is going to arrive in such a short time and be angry at the seller.

I did so much work to set myself up and im devestated that this could be the outcome of my very first sale. I also haven't recieved any money from paypal as they said they are holding it for 21days + because i am a new seller. It didn't sound right to me but i thought because it is a big company surely they will not rip me off.

I am trying to work my way up and be allowed to sell more than 10 items at once and i really was counting on this 1 feedback. If it is a negative will paypal keep my money? And do i have any way i can let people know that i did my very best by the buyer?

Feeling so deflated right now, i went from being so excited to wishing i never tried. I will never be able to sell the items i have as a new member with 1 feedback only and it says im a terrible seller.

Oh dear, you do have a problem buyer for your very first sale.  You have my sympathies.

Don't panic just yet...the negative feedback may never happen and if it does you may be able to get it removed.

It would be a lot easier to advise you if we could see the actual listing...we may be able to work out why the buyer would expect the parcel to arrive so quickly.  Maybe they expect all Express mail to arrive overnight and that is definitely not the case.

As for paypal holding your funds....that is right.....they hold the funds for 21 days for new sellers and sellers who have not sold for some time.  It may be possible to get the funds released earlier if the tracking shows that it was delivered and/or if the buyer leaves positive feedback.

Until you receive the feedback, be it positive or negative, don't worry about it.  If it is negative come back here and we will help you through it.  There are lots of ways to end up with a good outcome from a poor transaction caused by a bad buyer who expects far too much.

Keep an eye on the tracking today - that might put your mind at ease. Sounds like you unfortunately you didn't start out with a reasonable buyer.

Everything Lyndal says!!!

You've struck a doozey for your first sale. As long as you have tracking and the item is delivered within the estimated time range, they are not going to be able to open any sort of ebay or paypal case against you so rest easy on that score.

They may be able to give neg feedback, but depending on what it says exactly, you may be able to have it removed. If not, you definitely will be able to reply to it but Lyndal was right, ask here for suggestions as to wording if it does come to this.

Some buyers would be wary of a low score seller with a neg for their first sale, but a sensible, objective reply can often fix that. Shoppers can often work out if another buyer was just unreasonable, it can reflect more on the buyer than the seller.

On the bright side, the parcel may arrive today & you'll dodge a bullet.

You may be able to tweak the estimated delivery dates for the items you list too, in future, so you give yourself breathing space. You say you offered free express postage. Maybe just include free normal postage, I am sure some people take express to mean within 48 hours. Puts a lot of pressure on you.

I agree that it would probably be best to only offer regular postage plus set your handling time to 2 or 3 days. If a buyer asks if you can post express you can either refuse or you could email them saying you will use express but you cannot guarantee that it will get there as quickly as it should.  I would also charge for express, if you have free regular post then just charge the difference in price between the two.

Ebay give lots of advice which you should not follow like starting items low to get buyers interested, it just means that there is a very good chance you will sell at the opening price.

They say it is better to offer free postage, I used to do that on my store id but that meant I could not give any discount for multiple items so now when I list I have a postage charge of $5 so I can discount and it has not harmed my selling rate, in fact it has improved.

This sort of thing happens constantly because ebay continues to lie to buyers about express post delivery times.

Express post is NOT 1-3 days to anywhere in Australia from anywhere else in Australia.

Once outside an express post overnight delivery network, delivery time is promised by AusPost as no better than regular post.

In practice, express post from east to west or vice versa will usually be a bit quicker than regular post because it gets priority for shipping by air but definitely no guarantees.

I have been having an ongoing fight with ebay over this issue for a long time but until they stop lying to buyers there will be no change in sight soon.

As far as PayPal holding your money, contact the FOS and file a complaint. They have no legal right to do so and they know it, especially if the item has tracking that shows it as having been delivered.

I would also call ebay and ask them to remove the negative feedback based on the very fact that it was them who lied about the expected delivery time and keep asking to talk to a supervisor until you get someone who is willing to listen to common sense.

It may suck right now but to be honest I think this is good why? because you are now starting off in a place about as bad as it gets so it is all up from here. Also as of 20th (tomorrow) negitive feedback want be so important. Buyers are over protected by EBay and sellers are disposable even some of the long term ebayers who post here giving advice which is unfair on sellers. As far as looking like a terrible seller you want a lot of us know that some buyers are totally unfair to sellers. If you do get neg feedback you can leave a follow up message if you do do not be mad just state you case something like 'Was posted express post sorry AusPost let you down' Also you may not even get neg feedback

The 10 items can be increased if you phone EBay they will require you to send some documents to prove you are you and then should increase it to 100. Stick in there take small steps there are rewarding times being a seller as well.
