I purchased an item which ended up being faulty. Before purchasing I read the feedback and narrowed down my search to items located in Australia. In the end the seller and I could not come to agreement so he requested the item be returned at my cost but have the item sent to China before I get a refund. I read the return policy and happy to pay postal cost, however nowhere does it state he was from China. I only choose to purchase from Australia as I know what my rights shoudl situations like this occur but it turns out he's in China. Which means it could take forever to get my money back which isn't fair because I pay for all my item straight away.

yes it's really annoying. Everytime you try to click Australia only it still brings up items from everywhere else.
I really don't know why they have that button. Clearly the ebay bots don't know what "Australia Only" means.

The Australia Only button brings up sellers who sell to Australia Only, no matter where they are located.
That is why you will still get sellers from China or the UK or USA appearing when you use that criteria.

I know everyone nearly everyone keeps saying this but it always works properly for me, ie. if I click on Australia Only that's exactly what I see. I know of others that see the same as me.

Just start a dispute for the faulty item as then the seller has to pay for the return postage or they have to
come up with another solution where you get your money back,(don't offer to wait for a replacement as that
doesn't happen with sellers from China).
That's only so that can get the dispute closed and you lose your money.

Lyndal, are you sure?? Coz that doesn't make practical sense? When I am searching I would care about items located in Australia only, I wouldn't care if the seller ships internationally as well so doesn't make sense to have such a criteria? I think the default shows all items listed on eBay.com.au, regardless of where the item is located. When you select Australia only, it shows you the items located in Australia. BUT there's the sneaky sellers who lie about the item location like the one OP encountered.
OP, if the item is faulty the seller should be paying for return shipping, not you.
If you use the Australia Only option it filters out Australian sellers who ship internationally. Although some say it's different for them, and I have no doubts about that because they are experienced buyers and sellers, for most people, when they use that option they see only items from sellers that ship to Australia only.
What that means is, if a seller in China ONLY ships to Australia and no other country in the world, their items will show. They don't have to lie about their location. If a US seller ONLY ships to Australia and no other country in the world, including the US, their items will show. If an Australia seller ships to Australia and the US, their items don't show.
If you only want to see sellers from Australia, change your postcode in the search to something like Alice Springs and use the distance option. Then you should only see Australian sellers (and Chinese sellers who lie about their location). Not all Chinese sellers who show are lying about their location. Some do have warehouses in Australia that they ship from. That is usually evident by them showing postage via Aust Post and the option of paying via bank deposit into an Australian bank account.
