it just seems like it wont be able to hold my laptop lol anyone had experience of how to package a laptop (3kg) 16.4 inches wide

styrofoam boxes cut to size or even styrofoam box lids taped together with lots of bubblewrap as well. even some packing beads.
it should fit in a 5 kg satchel. with adequate packaging and protection. (mine did) Otherwise try the Bx4 flat rate box with appropriate packaging of course. after that it's the cube rate Aus Post calculator or courier.

have a look at the flat rate boxes where you can buy them from the p.o. and they take 15kg and they are trackable

Just another AP anomaly. Looks like these eBay AP Satchels were mostly designed to carry clothes, and even then you struggle to fit a 500g item in a 500 satchel, same fo the 3kg satchels.
Does not make much sense though, since casual selling of clothes on eBay does not carry much "weight" anymore....
I got so fedup with Satchel limitations once that I cut open a 500g Satchel, wrapped a bulky 500g item, then wrapped the satchel cover around it. I posted it, more out of protest than anything else, whether one could get away with it long term....probably not.

No you cannot.
It is not a question of fit it is the fact that you are not allowed to send anything containing a lithium battery in a pre paid satchel. They must be posted regular parcel with a road only sticker on.

what about if you remove the battery, and send it separately, PJ?

Personally, I very much doubt that lithium batteries are anywhere near as dangerous as some people would have us believe,
I buy Lithium batteries in batch from eBay Sellers on a regular basis, never had a problem. Lithium power....may not last long but so convenient....

Packages with lithium batteries are accepted and transported on a daily basis by Australia Post domestically as long as they are packageed in accordance with AP regulations including that they are stickered or marked ROAD TRANSPORT ONLY.
Prepaid post products such as satchels can also be used on the proviso that the pro-forma declaration re contents are not signed - the goods packaged appropriately and the satchels are marked or stickered ROAD TRANSPORT ONLY.
As noted on APs facebook page, sending such goods using a pre-paid express post satchel marked ROAD TRANSPORT ONLY and unsigned general declaration - is obviously going to negate the express service you have paid for.
