No, all they can do is deposit money into your account.
It is safer for sellers than it is for buyers.
But if you are not happy to give your account details, message them and instruct you prefer PayPal and it is free for them to register a Paypal account.
Pick up items should always be cash on pick up.

No problems with direct deposit from the seller's point of view (as long as you don't post until payment has definitely cleared into your acount - and this can take up to a week). Someone with your account number and BSB can only deposit, not withdraw.
A buyer has no protection from eBay if they pay by direct deposit though.

I consider it so safe that I have my bank details in the listing, in the payment field, in checkout and in the item won email. All anyone can do is make a malicious deposit into your account. I always used to say I was waiting for that to happen then it did, Somebody deposited 20+ dollars into my account with no reference and I had no payments for that amount outstanding and a month later no unpaid items.

As noted above, it's perfectly safe to give the Acct and BSB numbers to a buyer.
Newbies, I think, are sometimes a bit frightened about linking a bank account to PayPal as transactions can go in both directions once linking is in place.
Newbies can also be a bit worried about security too given the number of hacks and phishing expeditions that abound these days.
Consequently, they will often take a while to gain confidence with online transactions.

Quite agree, and I often make the suggestion to open a debit card seperate to personal accounts and link that to PayPal.
Then have it not be able to go into debt and if accounts are hacked, any trans will be knocked back if no or little funds available.
Simply top up for online purchases.

I've had newbie buyers wanting to pay by bank deposit. They couldn't access my details because they were trying to pay via the app. Even though I accept BD, I still encourage them to open a PayPal account because while I will definitely send their item, others may not. I also try to educate them on buyer protection and let them know that they don't have that with bank deposit. If the seller doesn't send, there's nothing they can do about it and they've lost their money.
Some have thanked me profusely and must have created an account because they have paid with PayPal. Others have said they're not interested, even though I've emphasised it's for their own good. I also let them know that if they don't want to open an account, they can still use PayPal as a guest using a credit card.

thanks for some reason it just rings a few alarm bells. next message was so will you end the auction or list a buy it now, text me your account details and I will then give you my PO box details? seem strange? I just said bid on the item, as it already has one bid on it.

Gee, that does sound very strange. I wouldn't send them any more messages and just see if they bid. If you don't already offer bank deposit, I would say PayPal only if they win the auction. If they don't have an account, tough luck.
If you do want to send another message to try and work out the situation better, I'd just say that you get their postage details when they win the auction. You can't end the item early and you can relist as a buy it now because there are other bidders and it wouldn't be fair to them.

Next time you ask a question it might be a good idea to give all the relavent information from the beginning. With the above information I would definitely not be giving out any personal details.
I would say the same as Tippy.....don't give them any details and just tell them you cannot end the listing as there are bids on it.
