Did you check the fees listed on eBay which are transparent before listing? Would you have sold the item for that amount outside of eBay? Would you have gotten that much exposure without eBay?

Whilst I agree that ebay offers high exposure etc etc I still totally understand newcomers shock at the actual cost of selling fees when they list for the first time, as the devil is in the detail in size 6 font I think, and the promotional hype that is most visible is
40 FREE LISTINGS EVERY MONTH
FREE listings
List 4 FREE

if that style of winch has a replacement cost of over $2000, then why not have a Buy-Now price of $900 with Best-offer feature. Then, if someone makes an offer you can counteroffer with $850 and you effectively halve your fees through getting $50 extra for the item if you sell for that. You can set the listing up to reject offers below a certain amount to weed out the loonies that offer $50.

Serpy - try it on Gumtree too. l've had a fair bit on there (bigger pick up items). People are prepared to travel if they want the goods and l'm not that far from you.
Mind you, there are some...erm....interesting folk that read the adds. Be prepared for some extremely silly questions.
