feeling sad. After 14years, probably will say goodbye

I'm feeling sad. I've been with eBay since 2003 and only mainly sold little stuff.. books, clothes, plants... garage sale sort of thing. Never made a lot of money but it was fun and cleared the clutter from my house.

Haven't sold much in the past couple of years due to work commitments and, have to admit, I missed the email about the FVF on Postage. So just recently, I put some items up and you can imagine my horror when I saw my fees.

As an example, sold some shoes for $5.00 (50c FVF) then another $1.33 for FVF on shipping... leaving me with a grand total of $3.17. lol... if you want to add the cost of fuel for me to get to the Post Office, well... let's just say I don't want to do that particular sum.

I'm assuming that eBay doesn't want to be bothered with the small seller anymore which is a shame, considering that's how they got started.

Has anybody tried Gumtree? I suppose I'll mosey on over there and have a look.

Mostly, I have had positive experiences here, a couple of totally horrendous ones, some very funny ones.

Time moves on, eh?

ciao bebes

I feel they are being sneaky because they've already charged you a fee based on the final price... but why charge you again on the postage charges? that doesn't make sense. I know all sellers are not the same and some will charge much more than the necessary but, as I said, I'm not one of them.

I sold one item in 2014 and about 10 up to Dec 2015. That's how I missed the notice. Wasn't taking a great deal of notice of fees.

World's best accountant, I'm not.

They should just say straight out that they are going to charge you on total price (incl shipping) and be done with it.

But that is exactly what they are doing....charging the FVF on the total transaction of item plus postage.  Previously they only charged the FVF on the item cost.

In the past any seller who was offering Free Postage was paying the fee on the postage anyway.  Now all sellers pay on the whole transaction.

hi  1 of the reasons is some  sellers would cheat the fees , so lets say something is going to be $20 + $8  postage  a total of $28

what some sellers were doing was making it $5 + $23 postage for instance  and paying fees on the $5  instead of $20

can you get the drift  or $1 + $27 postage   and so on .

I use to sell on eBay years a go and having starting again I do find that being charged on postal fees sucks but I made a choice to sell on Ebay and I have to except the fees they charge and find a way to pass them on. There are a lot of items I would love to sell but the extra costs make it impossible the increase in the Aus post prices has just made a lot more item unrealistic to sell but if I wish to use their service I have to accept the fees and once again find a way to pass them on.

What suck about it all to me is a lot of the good sold on Ebay.com.au are to Chinese sellers taking the money out of Australia. On the bright side even though it is a lot harder to sell on Ebay.com.au now than it was if you do it right the amount of Australian competition will be a lot less because most people are not crazy enough to stick in there and make it work ๐Ÿ™‚

I think to survive on eBay these days, every one-off item that is listed has to be properly managed with a mini business plan.  You need to consider all the effort taken to take a photo, edit it, upload it, write a complete description, handle it, take it to the post office, pay your fees to eBay and PayPal, etc.  I now simply add on a few dollars to my items to cover all this, otherwise the experience simply isn't worth it anymore.

exactly and that is why one has to charge $20 for a $10 vintage brooch and hey presto it won't sell.

My bad experence is the oppsite, ebay quoted surface shipping cost and air arrival time, no tracking available on cheapest rate, buyer complained and got refund, I got back charged, ebay dont give a rats about sellers.

Hi
Gumtree has never worked for me. You do realise Ebay owns Gumtree now. I do agree with everything you say though I like you sell small things and I honestly do not think we are being looked after. I see people write on here worried about getting into trouble for small things when bigger dealers are getting away with absolute rubbish sold as authentic and despite numerous bad feedbacks still maintain a top seller rating.
