$27 sounds approx right to sell a $220 item.

Ebay take 9.9% (category dependent) for a casual seller, so that alone is very close to $22.

PayPal will take 2.6% + 30-cents and that will be about $6.00 on a $220 item.

So should be close to $28 all up. So that is about the advertised fee rate you have signed up for.

So far as the holding period goes you can call PayPal and argue about that. It depends largely on your recent selling history as to if/not they will release the funds immediately. Also dependent on if/not you used a tracking service to deliver the item and can supply a tracking number.

If you believe you meet all their criteria for your selling account then you can lodge a formal complaint with the Financial Ombudsman Services (FOS). That should get the funds released.

If you have other well-established selling accounts that sell regularly without problems then you should also be OK.

Can you think of a cheaper alternative? Items listed on eBay are available to buyers Australia wide and internationally (if seller chooses to sell intl).

There are plenty of cheaper alternatives. They may not have eBay's traffic (yet) but it's only a matter of time.

It is quiet.

I think it demonstrates how much eBays tampering with format and positioning of links impact on engagement - whether that be posters or buyers

I agree. I think it also has to do with the "happy slappers" to a degree as well.

Don't discount peoples' abject hatred of eBay either.

I wouldn't mind a dollar for every member who's walked away in disgust.
