funds on hold for 1 month - yet another eBay rort

as a shared experience :

On an alternate long standing eBay account I have I started selling some items. Most have been $300 -$600 per item and have attracted "funds on hold until delivery confirmed" terms. Not particularly exciting to have all funds held but have lived with it.

Recent sale of item of approx $1150 had similar hold on funds until delivery was confirmed and then eBay decided to hold the funds for 1 month from date of payment. Payment being by new managed payment system.

Upon contacting eBay I was advised they can at times place holds on any such item the "system" may deem to be a higher risk transaction. I explained to eBay I manage approx 8 eBay sales accounts that all have 100% + feedback, and sell items of individual value from around $20 to $5000. I asked, given so many years of positive trading with eBay, and the fact that all that information is obviously accessible by them, why would they continue to hold funds on this particular transaction. I was given evasive reply about "system generated...algorithms etc"

AFCA can't assist as they state  ebay and Ayden aren't registered with them. OFT not particularly interested either.

In my opinion it is another example how large corporations skirt local laws and oversight , whilst thinking their policies, systems and algorithms are gospel law all must abide by.

I may hear the "if you don't like it don't use eBay" or "you signed up for it", and so be it, but this is further creep of boundaries from what I ever originally signed up with in regard to eBay and I'm considering maybe more disadvantage of the eBay managed payment system given such holds weren't in place beforehand.

Seriously , now 1 month before payment received ?

As I spoke with support I referred them to the item numbers I was taking down over multiple accounts as we chatted - all of which had values of $2K-$5K each. I wasn't rude about it, but they did disconnect the chat thread very abruptly  🙂

Oh, and this occurred at same time I received the standard THANK YOU from EBAY email, stating all the additional requirements imposed on sellers recently. Makes me sick really.

Only upside is when they go too far it is an easy decision to walk.

There are a dozen recent threads on this topic. At the end of the day, if you are using an account intermittently, then Ebay need to make sure that you are not a scammer who has hijacked an account to sell goods and quickly make off with the money.

By putting the funds on hold for a certain period, they are making sure that:

The item arrives

The item is as described

There are no disputes

There are no chargebacks

On other words, you need to build up both Ebays and buyer trust on a continuous basis.

Also, every time Ebay changes its T&C's, you agree to them the minute you make a listing. This is their playground, so it definitely pays to stay on top of the current guidelines which are not exactly hidden anywhere.

Pays to keep up with ebay's policies.
