ebay state they are not sellers or buyers but only supply a platform for transactions, if this is the case how can they legally charge and collect gst, most sellers are not required to charge gst in view of the amount involved. I consider the practice by the aus government would be illegal and it would be interesting to see this challenged in court.

According to the law pertaining to the GST on low value imports platforms such as ebay and Amazon are deemed to be the sellers.
It is perfectly legal for them to collect and remit the GST to the ATO....in fact it would be illegal if they did not do so.

It might be a good idea, for you to do some research. You may even find out, how to buy from overseas without paying GST.
