international postage - ebay calc discrepancy : aust post website different

hi all,

about to post a letter less than 500g to a4 to Canada, the aust post calculator website looks different and is more than the ebay calculator calculated.................has there been an increase within the last week for large letters?  I know local post went up recently with the new satchels but this seems to be different.

what is "registered post international dle" and why is it less than airmail costing for a large letter?

thanks

"registered post international dle" is a smallish letter 13cm by 24cm, and includes registration/signature. it's cheaper because it's quite small, you'd be hard pressed to fit 500g of paper in there and still keep under 2cm thick. For an A4 size letter you'd need the B4

size, which is about $22.

The other big catch is that you have to sign a declaration stating that it contains printed matter only, not goods, because it doesn't have a customs declaration.

I confess that I have posted the odd collectable postage stamp in one of these (it's printed matter), but strictly speaking you shouldn't use them for anything you've sold on ebay.

The ebay calculator ignores the existence of large letters and assumes everything is a parcel - for Canada it's actually cheaper to send a 500g parcel ($13.70) than a 500g letter ($15.50).  This is because when they increased postage in April they introduced 8 postal zones instead of 4, and kept airmail parcel rates the same for areas which corresponded to the old postal zones, just putting them up for countries in the new zones.... US and Canadian 500g letters are now best posted as parcels.?:|

The new auspost postage caculator is a bit of a worry to me, looks like they are trying to suggest that only documents should go as large letters domestically, though they are still allowing insurance and registration for them....

I just tested that out, not ticking the document check box and entering a 10 x 18cm envelope with a height of 1cm and weight of 150 grams. The only options I was given in the next step were parcels. 😮
