Did you contact them before you refunded preferably including photos of the damage? If not then I would not be at all surprised if the buyer refused the cancellation and gave you a neg.
Buyers get a bit sick of sellers making up excuses for not sending an item they have purchased so want to see proof it is in fact damaged.
I would always give the buyer options depending on the type of damage, for instance recieving the item anyway for just the cost of the postage, choosing another item up to 20% more expensive or a full refund plus a discout off any future buy.
