The question is still-what on earth would they achieve by monitoring an internet forum that is frequented by such a miniscule amount of ebayers-most of whom post under either buying ids or posting ids ???

Sorry, but that just sounds too ridiculous/far fetched for words IMO

OK, keep calling me a liar then. I was talking to some of my acquaintances there today about this. The ATO can get all of your IDs from just one, are you serious?

Jeer all you like, but they do keep tabs on these fora. It doesn't take much effort, just an hour or two per day. Sure they don't much care about the little fish, but they do like to make random examples of those who flaunt the law at any level.

I would seriously doubt they would monitor the forums as it would be a waste of money and time.

And the public service is, of course, unknown for doing that. ๐Ÿ™‚

The ATO has five staff working full-time on just one of their weekly newsletters. Laugh all you want, it's true.

It's obvious that none of you folks have ever worked in the APS before.

Some of us spent our working lives actually working hard for a decent living rather than having a cushy job doing nothing at the taxpayers expense.

Why would we be worried about the ATO monitoring the boards, especially if we are buyers?

I'm not trying to 'worry' anybody, just pointing out a mundane fact. If people do the right thing, they have nothing to worry about.

Wrong. Although I only managed APS 6. In 8 years, which is apparently pretty good. And I left after 11. My AS virtually promised me a promotion if I stayed, but I chose not to.

It pays to gauge the audience. Something you would know as a Canberran is that "a lot of the audience will be across the subject and many will know more than you, so it pays to stick strictly to the facts" - Jack Waterford.

Please ask me who he is.

The ATO really has no need to monitor these boards as they can obtain from ebay information on every seller if they choose.

With their data matching capabilities, which are becoming more and more sophisticated, they know exactly how much money goes in and out of peoples bank accounts, if they buy a new car, if they buy a house, how much interest someone has earned plus lots more. They can easily link accounts if people have more than one selling account to avoid taxes.

If a red flag goes off in their system then that person will most likely hear from them.

Monitoring these boards is all part of the detective work. It's unlikely that anyone here will end up in debtor's prison for making your (mostly) innocuous comments.

As Jen said - there are far easier, less labour intensive ways of monitoring eBay sales. Especially when they can catch the 95ish% who don't post to the boards. Or the myriads who sell on other sites. Or are you saying that the ATO waste (scarce these days) resources on expeditions to catch extremely small fish? Dream on.

The calibre of their compliance officers/ intelligence staff must have deteriorated drastically in recent times if that is how they now identify targets for investigation. Not sure how staff writing newsletters would be privy to their compliance targetting methodologies these days either. Something else that is new.

You are right. I haven't worked in the APS per se but have worked with the enforcement divisions across most of them.
