Also, notices EBay now charges a percentage of the shipping price! all i can say about that is WHAT! Anyway aside from please can anyone share? Australia Post queues are getting horrid lately as well. thanks

What are the advantages of a courier?
I don't like that Australia post has such a complicated system. And that it is base on weight mainly. I mean it does not make sense. You get som much volume in a van, plain or train, the weight is only second.
Are couriers cheaper?

Some are. some aren't.
Your best bet is to use a Courier Broker such as Sendle or Termando to get some quotes. That way you may be able to take advantage of the bulk freight prices offered by some companies who will not deal with small one off parcels.
Most of the bigger companies do not want to know the average ebay seller but do deal with these brokers.

The same volume, but...
1 tonne of lead takes less room than 1 tonne of feathers, but the vehicle can probably only carry 1 tonne or its suspension will collapse. An aeroplane has a maximum takeoff weight. If that fits in less than the entire cargo hold the rest of the hold has to be empty, assuming you want the plane to be able to takeoff and have enough fuel to reach its destination.
