Hi, I am just about to sell my item to the only person interested but my last email was curtailed.  Could it be under investigation or would it be a system glitch?

Depending on what you were discussing with the prospective buyer, ebay may well have blocked the two of you from communicating further.

Have you received a warning from ebay.

Note: any attempt to get around a block placed by ebay, will in all probability result in both accounts being terminated.

Edit:  All messages on ebay are monitored for policy violations.
