We’ve heard from some buyers that after making a purchase on eBay they are seeing a duplicate charge from their financial institution. We would like to clarify that this isn’t a charge - it’s a pre-authorised hold.

To ensure a transaction will clear, a payment processor usually communicates a pre-authorisation amount to a user’s financial institution when a user attempts to make a purchase. This pre-authorisation helps give certainty to the merchant and allows order fulfilment to be completed faster without waiting for funds processing to be finalised. This can appear as a duplicate charge on an account until the pre-authorisation is removed.

While a pre-authorisation amount may appear following an eBay purchase, only one payment will be deducted from the financial institution for any purchases. A pre-authorisation may however still appear on the account up to 60 days after purchase.
