I received an item that broke out of the box, so I contacted the seller for a refund. He agreed to one on the condition that I change the return reason to "Doesn't fit". I couldn't find a way to change the reason in the return case so I thought I could just close this case and open a new return case, but once I closed it, the item disappeared from my purchase history, and now wouldn't let me open another case. Now I'm scared that the seller wanted me to close the case to avoid going through proper channels. Is there anything I can do?

Yes… All very well if the goods on a shallow boat came to the planked wharfage already a pale, pale corpse; that’s clearly INAD. (Or LOSNAD?)
But if the LOS arrived quite living, not deadcold, and expired by rough handling in the removal (by some knight or burgher or lord or dame) from the shallow boat, alas – that’s a different tale.
As for the fish, I hope they are swimming in a bowl as Yeats described. Not in a kettle - or we might end up with fish tea, not a thing to which I am partial.

I prefer Tennyson. Fishes for courses.

I returned an item because it was the wrong one that I chose but they will accept the idea to return it then I went through the post office not eBay and returned it without a tracking number so when it got there they wouldn't accept that it's been returned so someone open a case .but I didn't open the case and not did I close it. every time I spoke to eBay they seem to just go mad at me and made it out there was something to do with me and that they weren't going to refund me . I also have dyslexia and don't understand things I no longer like eBay because they're just like every other business they don't particularly want to help anybody. See either.

If you return an item without tracking then there is no proof you even sent it back - there's your problem.

You need to follow the proper process
Not just do your own thing and expect to be covered for doing so
There are no special allowances/rules for anyone, regardless of their ability level/age/income and other excuse
If you do not understand what you are doing, get someone to help you
Not just do whatever you want and expect eBay to give you special treatment
