Managed payments and taxpayer identification number concern

I'm having a big concern with Ebay wanting me to provide my tax file number to them in order to sign up for managed payments.  This is manly because Australian government clearly states on the ATO website:

"In the wrong hands, your TFN could be used to commit fraud, so keep it safe.

Make sure you protect your identity by keeping all your personal details, including your TFN, secure.

There are only a few people and places that can ask for your TFN:

  • the ATO
  • Centrelink
  • your bank
  • your employer after you start a job
  • your super fund
  • your registered tax agent - you can find a registered tax agent, or check whether a person is a registered tax agent, by visiting the Tax Practitioners boardExternal Link website."

Not even Paypal asks for TFN and they deal with money only. What's your view on this?

Managed payments and taxpayer identification number concern

Really? No other online company that handles my money wants TFN not even Paypal.

Anyway, I've just came across their new managed payments fees. It's a fun read, they even want to charge $22 +GST for lost disputes among other things. I recommend you read all of it and leave a comment what you think.

I wasn't required to provide a TFN, so even eBay doesn't seem to require it.

My comment is unprintable, and my suggestion is for you to find somewhere else to sell.

I am actually on MP. The fees are within a few cents of what they were before. I don't get chargebacks, so that is irrelevant.

Maybe sign up to MP. Then you can comment from experience, rather than conspiracy theorist.

I have registered for MP on 4 IDs and have not been asked for my TFN.

I was asked to provide a ‘Government ID’ and I provided my DL number as I was using my DL to prove my identity.

Maybe some people are thinking ‘Government ID’ means Tax File Number.

Have been on managed payments right from the start, completed all my research and made 100% certain to cross all the T,s, dot the I,s  before signing on.  Double checked everything while signing on,  and  guess what?... I have not had one single issue with managed payments, paid on time, every time.  Signing on was a breeze.

It is good to see, that it has only taken you a month or so, to actually find some information by yourself.  I could give you some links, but if you find all the info by yourself, you might learn a bit more.
