What are some tell-tale signs that your "buyer" is actually a scammer? I'll start

- Makes a lowish offer and also disputes postage costs, then tries to turn Ebay into Marketplace, by trying to set up a pick up point and COD.

- creates a sense of urgency, the item has to arrive tomorrow

- has been on Ebay for a relatively short time with zero feedback as a buyer or seller.

I myself, am pretty new to being a seller on here, and would like to know if I'm on the right track with my instincts regarding this stuff. Plus, would love to know any other things I should be on the lookout for.

Also, I have a "buyer" who says they're local, but their email seems to be coming via Ebay.fr, that's french Ebay, not Australian Ebay. Whats going on? All of the above is one "buyer"

Re: What are some tell-tale signs that your "buyer" is actually a scammer? I'll start

Buyers and sellers are actually advised to 'set a pick up point' (neutral location rather than picking up from a person's home) so, that is being safe, not a scammer

COD is not cash on pick up, two different things

Again, cash on pick up is best for pick up items

Don't allow offers, you won't get low offers, if you do get stupidly low offers, decline the offer and block the low-baller

Not sure about turning eBay  into Marketplace, two different things

How long they have been a member has nothing to do with it, old accounts can be hijacked by scammers and long time buyers can also be scammers

Feedback as a buyer is meaningless anyway, since even the worse buyer in world cannot be given anything except positive feedback or no feedback. Plus, feedback is voluntary and many buyers can't be bothered leaving it for sellers

Some people have one account just for buying and one account just for selling (allowed by eBay)

Just as I do not use my selling/buying account for posting on the forum, as many others don't as we have experienced 'revenge buying' from people who post a question and object when given a factual answer

However, it is not uncommon for a buyer to be blocked (with good reason) by a seller, and they will open a new account to get around the block (not allowed by eBay, and which you can report if it happens to you)

You can also look at their feedback left for others to see if they are a serial neg-giver

A buyer buying something and then asking can you post it to their great aunt Agnus in the Antarctic , the time to ask is before buying

Items having to arrive tomorrow is more fool than scammer. You have the handling time in the listing/estimated delivery date

If 'all of the above' is one buyer

Have they already bought from you?

If so, cancel using the reason problem with buyer's address and then block them

If not, ignore their messages and block them

Does their feedback page say they are registered here or in France?

*Edited to add

That goes for any buyer who sets your spidey senses tingling. If you feel something is off/suss, ignore and block them from buying from you

Re: What are some tell-tale signs that your "buyer" is actually a scammer? I'll start

my tell-tale signs:

- buyers who ask you to email them to finalise a sale

- buyers wanting to arrange an off-eBay sale

- members who mention PayID

- members who mention 'eBay escrow'

- any mention of Apple iTunes cards

- buyers who offer way over asking price

Advice for both buyers and sellers - ALWAYS trust your instincts.

What I meant by turning it into Marketplace, was just disregarding all the rules here, like taking the sale away from Ebay etc and suggesting he pays me when we meet up (which I was never going to do) The guy just didn't seem to have any idea how it works here. I appreciate your advice. I do ok mostly, today this guy just just rattled me. Eventually he paid, and the item is in the post. Hopefully that's the end of it.

Re: What are some tell-tale signs that your "buyer" is actually a scammer? I'll start

Is it this item ?

"Captain America Stealth STRIKE Suit 1:6 Figure Hot Toys MMS242 12" Figure"

Is the payment showing in your seller hub ?

If the buyer wanted to meet you, does this mean  you posted to an address reasonably  near to you ?

..................................................................................................................................................................................................

"suggesting he pays me when we meet up"

For a genuine buyer, and if you offered pick up, cash on pick up is always best

Paying when you meet up is not against eBay rules. It is an option that eBay allows.

It is good that you are cautious, but don't let your concerns descend into paranoia
