eBay online chat. Anyone know why they try and keep you online asking you random unrelated questions

No not at all, in all my experience with eBay chat, and from a great number of posts on the forum, they either tell you want you want to hear so they can get rid of you as fast as possible or they simply 'hang up' (cut you off)

Not heard of  one who tries to keep you longer though

Not really a question, but now they tell you how great it is that you have been a faithful member of eBay for - then the number of years that you have been on eBay.

It sounds like you are chatting to the automated assistant (bot generated replies), rather than having selected Connect with  an Agent.
