"Federal Treasury wants Australia's online shoppers to pay 10% on goods under $1000.GLOBAL "e-tailers" such as Amazon and eBay would have to slug Australian customers with GST under advice being considered by the Federal Government."
The Federal govenment love banging those nails into their political coffin,I would think this idea would go down like the proverbial lead balloon....

bsal...
Have you ever actually worked for yourself as in self employed ?

bsal, do you understand anything about how the GST works, and more to the point do you realise that it is paid on almost everything you buy or use here in Australia?

As too those saying that the workers take a pay cut...what i am saying is why dont the retailers drop there 300-400% mark up on goods and make it a more realistic 20-40%.?????
How do you suggest they pay rental, fitout, electricity? Much less have anything left over to buy luxuries like food, housing and clothes?

By selling more at a cheaper price ????

That may be true to a certain extent bsal but in these times discounting is a fast track to ruination. It's interesting to note that online sales in Australia represent only 5% of total retail spend.
It's not the internet that is hurting traditional bricks & mortar retailers. It's the price wars they are having amongst themselves.
The ripples from the big stone in the pond ( the GFC ) are just starting to hit the shore now. People are frightened to spend or just don't have anything to spend...same result.
Bsal...the next time you walk into a store just ask the owner where they got all the FREE flooring, shop fittings and staff from.
I was in B & M and the number of monkeys on your back almost defy belief. Now compare that to a guy dropshipping from his home using a free website and paying $5.00 a month rent.
As I asked earlier.
Have you ever been self employed ?

Not if their markups aren't covering their overheads.

bsal, that is a pay cut.
Actually, it's a little worse, because they'd be working harder for less, and when it comes to retailers let's say business increases markedly, so they now suddenly find themselves understaffed but not able to afford to employ anyone else.... Reckon they can find any new staff to work for 50c an hour with no benefits so that they can keep those low prices?

Not to forget the cost of the additional storage needed for the increased stock levels.
