This is something I have thought of as I have an adult son who has brain damage .I am his carer.
He has asked if I could help him open up an account here to buy things.I have said that between State Trustees and myself we can help him buy things from here when needed (ie;using my account).
He is fortunate to have a carer but I know that many don't have that and there is always the possibility that he could get a friend to help him set up an account without either myself or State Trustees knowledge.
To sellers he just would be a faceless buyer and there could be all sorts of problems for the seller and himself. He may well be awarded the top prize for numptiness .He would not be meaning to be difficult ...he would however need a lot of things explained...though would most likely never tell anyone that himself.
The boards kind of open up my eyes up even more to those possibilities .
Has anyone else faced similar issues or thought about them?

Happy New Year to you too!
My understanding is that the name registered on your PayPal account must match the name registered on your bank account.
I think though if this is the not the case Paypal asks for verification from your bank . . . may get a little complicated, however if you have a POA this might be OK?

Hi Forum Fool ,
Officially the Trustees would have the financial POA though some things that they actually instruct him seems to sign (and/or are aware that he signs) kind of goes against that .They are aware that I am the Carer. What I can do is what I usually do, that is pay for things for him myself (in this case from my PP account) send the receipt to the Trustees (if he won't give me the money) and hope that they reimburse me somewhere down the track.

sorry, I didn't write your ID correctly and it doesn't look very good like that ...I am crossing my fingers that it is or will be OK with everyone.

So what if the OP's concern for her son's ability to have an eBay account was triggered by what transpired in other threads ?
I think it would be a worry, that if something goes wrong izabsmiling's son would not be able to handle it himself. Would he then ask for help?
I would be also concerned that he may buy something and forget, then buy more of the same week later.
I imagine his account would have to be supervised to make sure that if items do not arrive, the 45 day cut off is not missed etc., but in any case, I feel that it would not be legal for him to open an account.

supa nova, when I see certain things , I do think what if that happened to my son...the fact that people (who don't know about him) do all too often think of him as and call him an idiot and that I have had some really nasty types call and turn up here after money he owes or for talking to their GF makes the reality of some things potentially happening to him and us really hit home...I know how things can affect and impact on him and us.
The mobile phone comp I mentioned earlier called 'me' (my son had given my number) relentlessly even after the TIO had been contacted.

That is correct and yes I should have realised and looked at the Policy here as well...though a written policy in the whole scheme of things won't stop him or other like him opening an account...or 'helping' him out by opening one on his behalf. He does visit friends of his at times...that is his independence.I can not supervise him then.Ideally , I think that it would be good if his name could be blocked from opening an account.

Yes, it is worrying that others could open an account for him . . . . If you did let him use your account/funds and get reimbursed by the State Trustees at least he wouldn't feel the need to get someone to open it for him. You doing it will be much safer for him in the long run. . .

Others may be able to open an account for him but they will not be able to open a PayPal account for him as when you add a Bank account it needs to be verified by PayPal depositing a small amount of money to make sure the account belongs to the person..
You also can't add a bank account in PayPal that isn't in the account holder's name.

Thanks Patchoo , I had forgotten about the confirmation.
That's good to know about being able to add a bank account in someone elses name....though I'd imagine that that involves or should involve a bit more than is usually required.
I've finally taken some paracetamol ...here's hoping my New Years head clears soon lol
