A lot of my books (almost all over 2cm) are more expensive to post than the item cost. And that is within Australia.
It sounds, however, that the seller/s are using the Global Shipping program. This means that they post to a point (Pitney Bowes depot in Erlanger KY) who then charge a small fortune to onforward it to other countries.
Good for heavy items or that rare thing the seller is not prepared to post overseas themselves.
A simple search of GSP would find many threads about the pitfalls.

If you dont want to pay the ove the top postage you can always fly over and pick it up yourself.... or you could just shop local

a lot of sellers in the USA use the Global Shipping Program (GSP), where items that once cost reasonable amounts to post now are rediculously high to the buyer.
the seller i believe still pays what he thinks is a reasonable price but this middle man company (Pitney Bowes) adds an extra charge to the item before sending it on to the buyer.
this is ebays way of killing international sales.

the GSP can be stupid, just take a look at this thread

I recently bought a pair of pickle tongs from the US. The Seller and I agreed on a price of $US16 and the listed postage was $US21 through GSP!!
I asked the seller if he would just post the item in the mai,l as they weighed about 1oz, we both saw that Ebays postage price was $US6.85 making a total of $US22,85 so he posted them USPS!
I then got tracking numbers from Global Shipping saying where the item was at and at what stage!
I paid the seller $US22.85 and am now disputing the Pitney Bowes account of $US21.31 I received through PayPal for Global Shipping!!!
The sooner Ebay "wakes up" to this Global Shipping "rort" the better, and a few more Aussies may start buying from America!

Ebay has "woken up" to the Global Shipping.....who do you think put it in place?
And they are certainly not about to get rid of it any time soon....it is too lucrative for them.
Most sellers like it too as it protects them from bad feedback and provided tracking and insurance.
