Does Ebay Actually Make Seller follow Rules

Hi All, Im really frustrated with a seller and Ebay atm, Wondering if anyone else has come across this and how it worked out. I wanted an item that description stated Postage at buyers expence, I also contacted seller to make sure he would post. he said no problem. I won the item, $120, Postage was $30, Yep happpy at that, Then seller demands I pay by Bank Account as paypal is to expensive, I said I want paypal and will pay the fees if need be. he refused so I called Ebay, They said yep will contact him and tell him  he must follow rules. Then I get an invoice for  $120 item, $30 extra for postage and EXTRA FEE for Paypal of $150. Whats the go? If I want the item am I expected to either pay the extra or just let the clock go?   What are your thoughts etc? Thanks

Hello gras,

Yes I did read the description where it mentions postage and in postage itself it states: Pick Up Only

Hope you get this sorted out as it looks like you really want this clock Heart

This is how I read the ops post:

Item was listed as pick up only.

Buyer wanted postage - seller was happy to oblige but wanted payment to Bank account only - not Pay Pal (Pay Pal too expensive according to seller).

Buyer insisted on Pay Pal; offered to pay Pay Pal fees and reported the seller for not facilitating payment with Pay Pal.

Seller got rapped over the knuckles by E-Bay or Pay Pal (whichever I don't know) and then added ridiculous Pay Pal charges to the invoice Smiley LOLSmiley LOL

In my advice I was simply looking for a way to still make both buyer and seller sort of happy and have a somewhat decent outcome for both of them, but this is not going to happen if there is going to be advice of more reporting and stubborness on all sides.

What gives ...........

No - the OP states the listing said "postage at buyer's expense", which is basically how every listing that isn't pick-up only works.

And that is beside the point, anyway - if a seller offers PayPal they have to accept it, by eBay policy, without adding surcharges to use PayPal, whether an item is pick up only or not.

In postage it actually states:

Free Local Pick Up

and YES I know what the rules are re accepting Pay Pal......

my advice would be avoid this seller as hes not exactly being sensible. its a clock not a fridge. he cant refuse paypal and he cant make up charges of his own after selling an item. i'm sure, nice as the clock might be, its not the only one in australia and sooner or later you will find another being sold by someone with more people skills. i'd look on gumtree too, might be more clocks there.

It doesn't matter, or at least it doesn't change anything if, as the OP states, the seller offered a postage option in the description, which was confirmed by the OP.

The same policies apply - if PayPal is offered, it must be accepted, without additional surcharges.

I did not advocate that the seller should be allowed to refuse Pay Pal or add additional Pay Pal charges.

Please read my posts properly

Thank you

I overlooked some of the points you made in your posts, for that I do apologise, but I stand by my original advice.

Not being privy to the exact nature of the conversation, I can only go by what has been provided by the OP - specifically that the seller "demanded" bank deposit, refused to accept PayPal and then issued a new invoice once reported with an added surcharge which is (assuming not a typo) not only a ridiculous amount, but arguably vindictive and/or designed purely to prevent payment being made via PayPal.

"Then I get an invoice for  $120 item, $30 extra for postage and EXTRA FEE for Paypal of $150"

I'm going to answer this from a completely different angle and suggest that the extra fee of $150 is quite possibly a mistake.

The seller usually lists only pick up items and may not have sent  many invoices.

Quite possibly the seller was contacted by ebay.

$120 item + $30 postage = $150

It's not at all unusual for some sellers to make a mistake and double up the invoice hence another $150 may have been added on  by mistake.

"Unable to access contact information"

The seller's mobile number is shown on many of his listings , both current and completed, and I suggest you give him a call to clarify the situation first , before doing anything else.

Are you serious? That is totally the wrong information and they had no right to tell you that. If a seller wants the buyer to pay the fees, it should be included in the item price or the postage cost. It's NOT an additional cost that can be tacked on post sale.

If you still really want this clock, contact the seller and ask them for a new invoice as you are now happy to pay via bank deposit. Then, when they send it, pay it via PayPal. If they then don't send it, you can lodge an item not received dispute to get your money back, which will give them a defect. If they refund you because they refuse to send it, they will get a defect. Plus, they lose the 30c PayPal fee. They will also lose the eBay fees if they don't cancel the transaction.

I personally much prefer buyers to pay via PayPal. I do offer bank deposit, but only because a certain percentage of my buyers don't have a PayPal account and don't have a credit card. I always advise them that paying that way they lose their buyer protection and suggest opening a PayPal account. I make a point of telling them that having a PayPal account doesn't cost them anything and the money will still come straight from their bank account. A few have signed up, but most say they are not interested and still think they will incur fees of some sort by having a PayPal account.
