Does a store on ebay have to acknowledge a products warranty..

I bought a Coleman hot water heater brand new from an ebay store..When I looked up Coleman and called them they said to go to the store I purchased from...I told them it was off ebay,they said that should be fine if you have your reciept still..Yes I do..

I email the ebay store and they say..12 months warranty on this item? How can they offer that when Coleman itself have a 3 yr warranty?

Only if they are an authorised seller of a licensed product otherwise no ebay seller has to honour any warranty. 99% of eBay items wouldn't have warranty protection.

Your serious...wow that make a difference in buying stuff now..I thought buying a Coleman product,the warranty from them should cover it from whoever I purchase from...Oh well I will give Coleman a call tomorrow again and tell them the verdict..I have used it twice and already not working..

I the ebay store is an Australian registered company with an ABN you may be abe to go after them through Fair Trade.

Other than that your only 'warranty' as such is Paypal buyer protection which gives you 45 days to open a dispute.

If you paid with Paypal and funded your payment with a credit card then you may be able to do a chargeback but the time a bank allows varies, some as little as 90 days, some as long as a year.

An Oz business seller is bound to honour any warranty commitments they make in their listing/conditions of sale regardless of if they are authorised by a supplier to sell the goods.

You have to be very careful what you buy off ebay, even in the way of new products.

I was looking at very expensive blender/cookers (thermomix) which sell for $2000 here from the offical company, about $1600 new on ebay.

But if you buy on ebay and not from the registered company here, there is absolutely no warranty and what is more, they won't even repair it for you down the track if you have any trouble.

So it pays to check out some items before you purchase.

In addition, the warranty issue with re-sold goods aren't only in question on eBay.

They are the same for any second hand goods sold at garage sales, from the paper, Gumtree, etc as it is the manufacturer who sets the warranty guidelines and once removed from the registered seller's customer the manufacturer has no contract with the new owner.

Having said that, Coleman sounds open to negotiation so they may be more forthcoming than they are required to be in this instance.
