Ebay has lost the plot and their rules are being ignored. Disillusioned Aussie

I recently purchased a quadcopter on Gumtree, "Fully working" I was told, It wasn't and far from working at all.  Next I made an offer, every peny I've saved over almost 2 years of not having a beer and not going to the club for raffles. The seller accused me of lying in the note I sent him.  I explained I had saved from my Veteran's pension to buy a DJI quadcopter and all I got as a reply, I was lying, I assume about being a Disabled Vietnam Veteran, he even used the fact I didn't include my full name "why would I"

The final straw was what I could have considered my dream purchase.  Just enough money in my savings account to buy the quadcopter, plus pay for posting. I asked for assurance it was actually fully working, and if it was I would buy it.  My reply, We've already sold it.  The darned thing was still being listed on Ebay for crying out loud, who sells something and leaves it listed 14 hours before the end.  I might add it wasn't an auction, I was going to Buy It Now.

I'm very disallusioned with Ebay, or probably more so with the sellers, but to be called a liar, plus have my dream purchase pre sold. I'm not happy.  I know it's a waste of time telling Ebay about it, they do little about complaints.  I've complained three times about Chinese sellers saying they're living in Australia. That's Illegal says Ebay, and yet almost every seller selling electronic gadgets in Australia are actually Chinese living in China. Nothing has been done to clean it up and meanwhile we've lost a massive number of Aussie sellers.  And who can blame them, they simply can't compete when they have to buy from the same people selling here illegally.

Ebay buying has lost that feeling it used to generate for me.  It used to be fun, you find something you want and check the feedback, and it's it's a Chinese seller.  The same goes for the USA and the UK. Chinese sellers supposedly living in the countries they list in.  I don';t want to buy from the Chinese if the item is being sold by an Aussie, you get it on time if it's an Aussie.  Oh yes, I did buy a couple of broken quadcopters ion the weekend, to fix a couple of friends quads. The seller hasn't even acknowledged the fact I purchased them yet.  Yes Ebay is losing whatever it was which made it fun. And which Aussies use Amazon? Hardly an alternative is it?.

Well Amazon actually is a fine alternative to Ebay.

Really?

I have yet to hear anyone else have that opinion.

Everyone I speak to say how useless it is....their prices are not as good as most of our discount outlets such as Harvey Norman and the Good Guys.

How much do you buy from Amazon.....are they good for pet foods and other small items?

They certainly aren't any good for electricals and furniture.

close your eyes, tap your heels together and repeat, theres no place like amazon 3 times.

you will magically be transported to amazon world where all your dreams will come true.

items will be cheaper, postage will be free and things will be delivered before you bought them.

especially rodent food.

I haven't come across anyone who has bought from Amazon yet.

I'm not saying it won't eventually take off, but given that their warehouse isn't all that far from where I live, I would have expected to see more advertising material from them.

At the moment, it is very quiet. Ebay at least has the occasional ads on TV. I haven't seen Amazon advertising at all yet.

amazon is a company, just like ebay, out to make money.

maybe the amazon australia of today will offer inducements to get customers. but we all know once established the fees and charges will be amped up.

its the advantage of being a BIG company, you can use your power to squash competition and once you have dominance you can raise your prices.

its the cycle of life in business, the big eat the small.

then the complaints start.

I am selling on Amazon, although with a lot less items than what I have on ebay, and I can vouch that sales on Amazon are in the dung pit. Even my own website sells much better than my Amazon shop.

I really should be listing more items on Amazon, but the sales are not giving me an incentive to spend days listing. I'm putting up with it because I want an alternative to ebay and hope that one day Amazon will be just as good.

@michellebartley,

Australians have been able to purchase from Amazon sites for years. I don't think there's ever been an embargo on buying. I buy from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, Amazon.ca, Amazon.nl, Amazon.jp, and if I'd known about the one in Brazil, I'd have already bought from there too,  - oh, and at least four times have purchased from Amazon.cn and Amazon.jp. No Amazon in Russia, otherwise I'd have been buying things from them, but it just meant a little more work finding two or three different Russian online stores selling the sort of things I wanted, although O gospodi! The time it took for my last order to arrive! Увы и бездельничать! And the damage to some of the things inside ... water damage had caused some of it, but in all honesty it looked and smelled as though some rough sailors had got very very very drunk and urinated beery excreta over some of the books inside AND poured honey over them after that.

HOWEVER... have you ever sold anything on Amazon?

I am sure I researched this a few years ago on behalf of someone else. The gist of it at the time was that it wasn't possible for Australian sellers to sell on Amazon - or that it was so onerous to do so that it wasn't worth doing so in a business sense.

It's with the advent of Amazon.com.au having items other than downloadable books that things will (I think - can someone confirm?) have changed for sellers in Australia. They can now sell on Amazon, although I have heard that the terms are quite onerous.

Amazon is wonderful? Well, it certainly can be, and has been in some senses. Amazon's also done damage to a lot of smaller businesses, but there's no denying that the sheer range and ease of use and clarity of postage and international availability to buyers is incredibly attractive.

But for sellers ... in Australia... hmmm. I suspect... no.

(By the way, Amazon may cancel buyer accounts on Amazon at their discretion, and Marketplace sellers can decline to fulfill a customer's order at their discretion.)

One more thing: Amazon customer service leaves eBay's customer service for dead. There's a lesson to be learned from that; eBay could improve dramatically by providing a similar level of customer service help. But they don't, and I suspect they won't. The only reliable help in almost every eBay buyer or eBay seller spot of trouble is right here on these boards, assisted by the experienced, to the point, sometimes acerbic but always knowledgeable volunteer help of long-time eBay members who have been through almost every eBay crise d'achats that can be imagined.

I am mainly a buyer & I have to say, the reports from American friends about Amazon have often been about amazing service & delivery times, good prices, wide range of goods & on it goes.

So a few years back i had a look for a couple of scrapbooking items I was after.

I found them okay but they were for sale in USA/Canada only.

Never once was I able to find anything I wanted that shipped to Australia so Amazon became synonymous in my mind with don't even bother looking.

I know they're here now, they are just down the road. So I had a quick peep a few weeks back. Nothing I want yet & the prices weren't amazing.

It might all change in the future but for now, I don't see it as all that special.

if The Donald has anything to do with it their shipping via the US mail system may soon get more expensive.

He has publicly stated that he thinks that Amazon pays too little tax AND they are taking advantage of the US postal service.

Don’t be surprised if their prices rise if they get taxed more and if they have to start paying more for US shipping.
