Free Postage? Hmmm

I've noticed a growing trend of items for sale with 'free postage' Now some may state that it depends on regional costs, but when you see a simple item located in Australia which would cost no more than 10 bucks to post to any where in Aust and they state it costs over 40 bucks Australia wide and in the comments section if some one complains they reply 'it differs according to region' one wonders why even have 'free postage' in the first place except to suck people in?

Re: Free Postage? Hmmm

now is it posible that the ebayers who go to the item have post box addresses,  and it shows free postage  , as this is courier only deliveries, just a thought .   because in galery it even shows me free postage but when i click on it   shows me a price,   only a very small posibility, but what the heck,

Re: Free Postage? Hmmm

My guess is that the seller is using a postage rate table and has set the fixed base rate as 0 and added a surcharge for each area.

This will then show as free post in the gallery and the postage costs will only show when you go into the actual listing.

Re: Free Postage? Hmmm

I just checked on my active accounts on my laptop. Every single one of his items is showing as free postage in the "see all items". When I clicked it it showed me the $15 postage that I mentioned earlier. I don't have a PO box.

I also just checked on my phone. Same scenario as the computer. Free postage in the see all items, charged postage in the listings. It's killing his feedback as that seems to feature heavily in the red dot department.

Re: Free Postage? Hmmm

I get what you mean, I had not looked that far.

Same happening here and I don't have any PO box or anything.

I also looked at feedback. Most negs seemed to be for problems with the actual products but a few then threw in the bit about postage not free.

I think jensmanchester must be right when she says:

If this is so, is there another way the seller could list it so that the actual cost for every area will show? I like the concept that the real postage is showing without any work on my part as a potential buyer. I don't have to type in my postcode or go to any trouble.

That part works well.

What the seller needs (and what ebay needs to offer) is some system where a seller can auto set postage as 'varies' but have that surcharge app working.

Is there a way? (Sorry, as although I have sold on ebay, never had anything as good as that postal price to every area working for me so don't know the answer.)
