GST on items from overseas, Ebay and others.

Since Ebay items from overseas now got a lot more expensive with not only 10% tax on items but also on shipping, how does it work with other overseas sellers? I buy a lot of stuff from various sellers, but mostly not from Ebay. None of my sellers ever asked me to pay the extra tax. I doubt that some two bit small dealer from overseas would even know or care about our GST tax.

I'm sure the tax is not applied on Amazon purchases from the USA.

Amazon USA will not ship to an Australian address, hence the GST is a non-issue

The only thing I can think of that they could turn our local postman to a tax collector. When you receive the item there could be tax slapped on it to the declared value + the postage off course.

They claim that the tax will help our local shops but from my experience buying from overseas even with total say 20% extra cost including the postage is still cheaper, they must know that.

IGNORE THIS ADVICE . . . . . it is not true.

Amazon blocked Aussie buyers from their USA site because they were not prepared to sign up for the EDP collect model of tax collection.

I suspect it has more to do with building their Amazon.au presence than refusing to sign up for EDP collection.

in which case you are paying a GST inclusive price when buying from Amazon.au . . . . . so GST is being charged even if it ships from USA.

I don't know if its inclusive. There's nothing on the invoice saying there is a separate charge for GST which is on Ebay. And you can still buy items from the USA as the items from the US sellers are listed on AU site. But you can't buy from the Amazon US site anymore.
