Just wondering if anyone knows what's going on with the GST tax being applied to low value imported goods. Was supposed to be July 1, but I had heard this was being held off for a year? I've googled & check the govt pages but I cant find anything about changes to the changes.
So, is it still going ahead?

Looks like it is, one of my regular suppliers has just advised that all of his stock will be rising by the 10% as from 1st July, as he imports from the UK and because his bulk orders are always over the $1000 mark, he will be passing the rise on. As with smaller items one off from China for example, it may not apply, as long as it is below the $1000.But I would say that anything purchased within Aust that has been imported by the wholesaler will cop the rise as most serious wholesalers would be spending at least that amount per order, so they will have to pass it on to us.

Anyone importing more than $1000 worth of goods has been paying import duty and GST for many years.

The import charges on low value imports will not apply till next July....it has been held over for 12 months.

Oh boy. It seems Gerry Harvey (and no doubt other retailers under the delusion we will all rush to bricks and mortar shops when the tax comes in) thinks it's a good idea. The government (not exactly the sharpest knive in the block) also thinks it's a good idea. However....
It seems there is no one (department, organisation, whatever) who wants to have a bar of it when it comes to implementation. Added to that it seems it can't be enforced on overseas companies. It may be that ultimately we will end up paying this extra tax through the nose (as usual) to fund a new department set up to administer it. since the ATO, AP etc won't touch it with a 10ft barge pole.
Our stupid government at work...at their usual standard it seems. Sigh.

Understandable.
Importers of low cost items are generally end users.
The Liberals won't look after them as they are not big business.
Labor won't look after them as they are not unions.

I completely agree with you Zanadoo. It will be interesting to see how the Government plans to implement and police this. More tax payer dollars wasted no doubt.
The import calculation process has changed from last year. And from August 2018 it will change again. Oh well, a change is as good as a holiday they say.....

Oh yes, it's gone ahead alright. Just bought an item for under US $5 and 10% GST was added on. Oh well, I suppose the Government must really need my 50c.....
