I only look for used items. Can I set this as my default setting

Yes you can, when you do a search, look at the left, and there are ways to define by new, new with tags or used.

Select used, then save your search, then you can use your saved search. It will be in the myeBay menu on the left under saved searches. You can select to get emails or not as you prefer.
