For sellers to say the location is Australia for an item when in fact they are in the US? or do they only have to list where the item is?
Item location: NSW, Australia
Posts to: Australia
I only discovered they were in fact in the US upon recieving the email. Not that that is a huge problem as long as the item comes from where it claims to be.

What email do you mean? How can an email tell you it's being delivered from the USA?
Item Location means where the item is.
The other locations are:
- Sellers Registration country
- Sellers current location
- Site where the item was listed (eg: eBay.com)
- Site where buyer was logged into when they purchased
- Item Location stipulated in the listing.

It depends - where the seller is located is not necessarily where the item is located, and that's what the listing has to state (otherwise it's misrepresentation and a policy breach). So it's poossible that while the seller is based in the US, their products ship from Australia.
It is actually common practice to misrepresent item location, though, but it seems action is rarely - if ever - taken against sellers who do it.

I just wondered copps the email from ebay says they are from Davis in CA. It's no biggie maybe they have a warehouse here?
The only reason I asked was that in the past the same thing has happened and the item has ended up coming from overseas. As long as it works its not a bother but it will be interesting to see.

Thank you for that!! ๐ I just wondered how it all worked.

I take issue with this, why supply false information for starters, what are they hiding..
Are the items they are selling fake?
I prefer complete honesty

I prefer complete honesty
As, I'm sure, do most of us. Sadly however, you're unlikely to find too much honesty on eBay. ๐

They may or may not be selling fakes, but the primary intention is not to hide but be seen, by manipulating search results so that the listings still appear to people looking for items located in Australia.

You are confusing Seller Registration Address and Item Location. Maybe the seller used to live in the USA and now lives here? Who knows... you'll find out soon enough, after which you can choose what action to take if they've lied.
For the record - I hate people who lie about Item Location.

I'd say it is more common for the seller to say the item is in Australia...but it's actually in China or Hong Kong. X-(
