Sometimes other things go wrong, as well. A perfectly good seller with hundreds of positives will sometimes have a heart attack.
Of course, it would be nice to know and perhaps send a message to them. However, you still need to put in a claim so you don't lose your money. Also put in a negative so that other people buying will think twice about it at this point in time.
If the seller comes through and is able to trade again, they can contact eBay, explain, and see if they can salvage their business.
I feel for people in this situation...
