I get asked all the time if I can find such and such on ebay for family and friends. Once I find what they are wanting, they join and then
buy. Most then continue to use ebay for more purchases. All have been happy so far.

Never had that reaction.
Admittedly, my line is that I sell on eBay and would they like my card.

So the thread title is new buyers to eBay, but it seems you are complaining about non buyers from eBay. Surely you are off-topic.
And you wonder why, repeatedly, sellers put members on their blocked lists.

I don't care what more than 6 people (all relatives) care about me. And even then my opinion trumps what they think.
Why are you bringing the matter up? Why do you care that people don't agree with you that eBay is a place to buy stuff? Why put it on the boards? They are usually for questions and asking for resolution of same, and I can't think of a single way an eBay member is likely to be able to convince your circle of acquaintances that buying through eBay is not social suicide. Especially when they can only communicate on the boards which your mates would never visit.
Maybe just don't tell people you buy on eBay if it causes so much angst?

I have never had anyone react that way....most of my friends ask me to show them how to set up an account.

Its strange but when you tell people you shop on ebay they look horrified. Like you are an alien. Panic sets in and they say things like oh but if I shop on ebay I wont receive the item or they will steal my money. It is rather amusing in a way. And 9 out of 10 people say it.
Hi Michelle - I find I get a few strange looks when I tell people I sell on Ebay full time for a living. Some are interested to know how it all works and others tend to turn their noses a little higher in the air. ( particularly at the private school that ebay pays for the kids to attend ) Although attitudes are changing, I think there are a lot of people who are still coming to grips with online shopping. ( which means there is still plenty of growth potential to come ) Your OP does raise some questions about wether ebay could be more active in controlling the obvious scam sellers ( and buyers ). This could allay some of the publics concerns and possibly increase business for everyone in the long term. ( and then more fees for ebay EVERYBODY WINS !!! )
