Partial refund for repair?

Hi everyone! Just after a little clarification/advice. Bought a used sewing machine in good condition, on receiving the machine found it was seized (probably from lack of use/maintenance). I’m quite happy with the machine and wanting to just repair it rather than return/refund. I’m going to see how much it will cost to repair and ask for a partial refund. The seller has been quite slow to respond to messages in the past and I’m just wondering what recourse I have for a partial refund to cover repair if they don’t respond? I paid through PayPal if that makes any difference.

Thanks!!

You have no recourse through paypal for a partial refund for repairs.

Only the seller can do that.

You also need to be aware that if you have the machine looked at to get a quote for repairs it is unlikely that you can then open a dispute if it is too expensive to do those repairs.  You have to return the item in the same condition you received it in order to get a refund.

Partial refund for repair?

Thanks lyndal! I’m going to talk to a local repairer today (he’s an engineer/expert in this particular brand) and see if he can give me an idea on costs without opening the machine. I’ll return it if I have to though and won’t do anything to the machine just yet until I have a better idea on what may need to be done.

Immediately lodge an INAD case and then you can negoiate with the seller and outcome to your satisfaction

Not a good idea if they want to keep the sewing machine - disputes should not really be used as a negotiation tool, they are more of a last resort, and if the buyer has already indicated they want to keep the machine, the seller could well just accept the return request instead, knowing that they may not return it at all (since that's what disputes actually are, a request to return the item for a full refund).
