Hi,
I've recently won an auction for a reasonably expensive item ($500) which is pick up only. I bid assuming that I'd go and make sure the item was as described, hand over the cash and all would be sweet.
The seller is insisting on payment being made by Paypal before pick up. It's been a few years since I've used either eBay or Paypal but I remember that Paypal isn't advised for pick up items.
Basically what happens if I pay then get down there and find the item has been incorrectly described etc? I'm assuming because it's pick up that I'd have no Paypal protection. I'd just feel more comfortable paying cash, and I would have assumed the seller would have preferred it to since they wouldn't have to pay fees.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Definitely insist on cash payment after inspection.

Tell the seller that if you pay by paypal you can collect the item and then open a dispute for item not received as they will not be able to provide proof of postage.
Make it would like you are doing them the favor here.
So for this reason to help protect them you will pay with cash on pick up.
If after you have inspected the item and it is not as described you can walk away with your money.
There is no paypal protection for pick item paid with paypal.

Thanks for the replies, so basically if I pay Paypal and they aren't as described I've done my money? I'm also a little bit concerned because the seller has a negative feedback for something that looks like a pick up gone wrong.
I'll try to figure out how to word it that if it's not cash on pick up, the deal is off (probably cop some kind of ebay sanction but I'm not risking that sort of money just to avoid it). Thanks heaps.

If the seller will not accept cash on pick up and you will not go through with the sale as you want to pay with cash, and IF the seller then opens a dispute for non payment and closes the dispute for non payment there will be a link in the email from ebay on how to appeal the non payer strike and when you do this the strike will be removed.

As the listing has the Cash On Delivery as a payment option for the golf clubs go through the checkout and pick Cash On delivery as the payment option and then the seller has to send you the golf clubs that you pay for when they are delivered.
This will cost them a heap.
They obviously meant cash on pick up but they are even refusing that.
Tell the they have cash on delivery as an option so why are they refusing it?

Sparklz that is simply not true.
If a seller puts a Cash on Delivery option on their listing they can charge the buyer for the cost of that service, it is not free to the buyer.

They can add it IF it is in the postage costs.
They can not add it as an extra after the sale.

Absolutely choose COD, the numpty seller obviously thinks it means cash on collection. If they then open an unpaid item dispute and you get a strike it will be removed on appeal as it is the seller who is refusing to deliver and get the cash.
Perhaps they had somebody refuse to pay for a pick up item after inspection, as you are allowed to, so think insisting on Paypal is the best solution.
If they did not actually offer cash on pick up then you cannot force them to accept that but I would send them the following:
I am more than happy to pay with Paypal if you insist but are you aware that there is no buyer or seller protection for a pick up item. I will obviously fund my Paypal payment with a credit card so that should the item not be as described and so rejected by me I will be able to do a chargeback through my bank which will cost you an extra $15 as well as the cost of a full refund from Paypal.
For the protection of both of us I would prefer to come and inspect the item and then pay in cash if it is as described, should that not be acceptable I will choose Cash on Delivery as my payment method and will hand over the cash when you deliver!
