Pitney Bowes and excessive costs!

Totally disgusting what this company is allowed to get away with on eBay - Is there not a rule on eBay about being over charged and the ability to get refunded? Pitney Bowes are refusing to engage and provide a refund for excessive costs.

I was charged over $60.00AUD to have two small prints sent from the UK to Australia - This cost should have been no more than $15.00AUD.

Why are eBay allowing such a practise to occur??

Re: Pitney Bowes and excessive costs!

There is no recourse. Pitney Bowes will not refund, nor will eBay, nor will the seller (as they didn't even receive that money).

The time to do your due diligence is prior to buying when the postage is quoted at 30 quid, not after you've already paid.

This has been an issue for years - if you have a look at this board there are about 3 threads about it on the front page. Read those and you will be as up to speed as any of us.

Re: Pitney Bowes and excessive costs!

Had never heard of them before this and did not check so my fault there for not paying attention.. But regardless this company should not be allowed to engage eBay sellers into using their service. It is completely criminal!

Shame because the seller was great and it ends up them that gets the bad rap..

Surely individuals should be protected against this practise.. I'm wondering if Australian buyers are an exception under the consumer laws..

Re: Pitney Bowes and excessive costs!

A lot of buyers are stearing clear of sellers using the GSP.

I am guessing USA and UK are losing millions each year in potential revenue due to the program.

A good service as I understand for larger items but it's reputation precedes it.

You obviously have no idea what the GSP is.   It is ebay who opts the sellers into the service....often the sellers don't have the faintest idea that they can opt out of it or how expensive it is for the buyers.

Sellers like it because they are protected from negative feedback, their items are insured and they don't have to worry about the Customs paperwork for overseas postage.

I am not sure what you mean by Australian buyers being an exception.  If they buy from a seller who uses the service they have to pay it.

As yet the service is not available to Australian sellers.

Re: Pitney Bowes and excessive costs!

We never buy from sellers using this option.

We ask if they will send without using the GSP and if yes will continue with the sale, but many say no, so we then move on to someone else. As someone else, said time to talk with the seller is before buying.

Many sellers don't even realise how it works, ie that the buyer has another charge added over and above the sellers postage cost, so giving them a bad feedback is a bit hard, of course many have no idea how to opt out of this function. If the seller can't or won't remove the GSP function, just move on, you have had a hard lesson thrust on you, is it right? legally yes, but ethically probably not.

Don't worry we have had it too, and boy did it make us sit up and take notice. This is now the first thing we look for in a sellers listing, and the item would have to be really worth considering for us to keep moving forward. Mostly we just click "next"!! and we are probably not the only ones doing so.

There has been streams of complaints and comments on the discussion boards, about this function and nothing changed so you really have to decide if the item warrents paying the extra. Sometimes you might pay and sometimes not, but at least now you are fully aware of the possible consequences, sorry that you had to go through this but please don't stress, life is too short.
