Possible scam

Hey everyone I won a bid on a ps5 digital last sunday and bought it for $780 with $20 postage through paypal. The seller was in contact with me and responded very fast on the last day of the bidding but the day after I saw he did not mark it as posted yet to I tried to get in contact with him and have done that everyday since. Today is when its meant to come and still very worried and my anxiety is going through the roof. He used his account once last year and that was it. Anyone know when I should go for a dispute??

With no response to the case, no tracking number and the item not even marked as sent you will get your money back 100%.

For the future what should I look for when buying an expensive item like this so this wont happen again?

In future, probably steer clear of expensive items like this because you're not getting any warranty. As others have suggested, go to a real store or buy from a proper company. You look to be new to ebay. Maybe dip your toe in with a few smaller items, prefereably not electronic and not from China.

You can get some good buys on ebay but the best thing is not to rush in.

1. Compare prices. Sometimes you can get the same thing elsewhere at a better price.

2. If the price on ebay is amazingly cheap, be suspicious.

3. Look for a seller who has a good rating and check that some of it is for selling and not just as a buyer and that some of it is recent. If you find a seller with eg a lot of positive feedback, perhaps even in the hundreds (for selling) and a rating of 99% or more, you are probably dealing with an experienced seller. They are probably in it for the long haul and are likely to be more responsive to messages etc.  It's not like normal life where a score of eg 92% would be considered pretty good going. On ebay, that would be a low score. Even 96% is pretty low and would need investigating.

4. Read the seller's feedback, in particular all negs and neutrals. See if there is a pattern or some particular problem that keeps coming up. Cast your eye over the recent positives too.

5. Buying from Australia will make things easier for you if there should be any problem as most sellers will be required to give you a postage label for a return.

6. Ebay is great for a lot of things but from reading these boards for a while, I get the impression there are some categories of items it is best to steer clear of. Electricals, electronics, the sorts of games you bought.. all of those can run into problems.

And lastly, ebay has improved a lot for buyers and part of that improvement is you are given an expected delivery date range and if you pay eg via paypal, you can apply to get your money back if things go wrong and an item does not turn up.

Never let any seller string you along with promises. Read up on terms & conditions and always make a claim earlier rather than later. Some sellers try to delay you till your 30 days or whatever with ebay have passed. If that happens, you can always apply to paypal directly but it is better to keep all options open and go with ebay first.

You have every reason to feel nervous. You spent a lot of money on something where the seller has not respinded and not sent tracking details and furthermore, the item hasn't arrived when it was supposed to. Sure, those postage estimates sometimes don't work out exactly but keep in mind that the dates are what ebay will refer to so follow them exactly. If your item has not arrived, do as others suggested and open a case. Finalise it asap which will probably be a few days later, to apply for your money back.

Your seller may be a newbie and while everyone has to start somewhere and some new sellers are perfectly fine, I am not impressed by one who sells such an expensive item & does not respond at all to messages. It was their job to read up on terms and conditions before selling. Letting a customer know an item is on its way is a basic courtesy anyway and when we sold, we always messaged buyers to tell them when we had posted their item. These days sellers only have to click an icon to indicate sent but if they don't know that, they could easily have sent a message, we know they know how to do that.

So you go for your claim, you go for it immediately and if the seller does respond, don't close it on their say so unless you actually have the ps5 in your hands. I understand exactly why you gave feedback, your only mistake may have been in giving a neutral and not a neg. Time will tell.

When attempting to give advice - please make certain it is correct.

I thought everyone knew opening a dispute in PayPal negates any dispute with eBay.

Try eBay first - if not successful then PayPal.

Re: Possible scam

He has already opened an eBay dispute. The seller did not respond, so he asked eBay to step in on the 22nd. This is basically the first business day after the escalation, and I believe he will get his money back soon if you look at the details above (no response, no tracking number, item not marked as sent).

Re: Possible scam

I was responding to DVD - who suggested he open a dispute in both eBay & PayPal.

Re: Possible scam

You know full well NOT to do as you advise

Kindly stop giving false 'help'

Numerous members have already given CORRECT advice to OP on how to handle this

Opening a case in eBay AND PayPal will negate both as you are aware
