Seller is requiring more postage

Hi,

I've won a dress which was originally specified at $6.40 shipping. They've now informed me that they didn't know Aus Post has increased their postage cost to $7.45 and are asking me to pay the difference before they send the item. Should I pay for their incorrect postage?

Yes- would be good to pay for it 🙂

On a slightly similar topic, I've been wondering if anyone feels sorry enough for sellers who underestimate their postage cost to the extent of offering to help cover the cost of shipping? For example, a few times now I've had some sellers of books/magazines charge $4-$5 for shipping only to realise later that their item weighs a touch over 500g and have to be sent via a 3kg parcel (so costing them $13.40).

No one has ever asked me for extra payment.
Only once has a seller accept an offer for some extra payment - (it went towards a weighing scale she said lol) although all offered were grateful

If it's is something I really want and the item cost was a bargain I'd probably be OK with paying extra provided it wasn't a small fortune.  Sometimes though you don't get the chance!  I had a US seller underestimate the postage (this was some years ago) for what turned out to be a heavier item than she expected.

She didn't think to ask for extra money first but decided it send it to me anyway...but not by air.  This was one of those occasions where 'shipping' as the Americans say was quite literal. 🙂  Nearly 3 months later it finally arrived.  All OK and I let the seller know, but by then we had both almost forgotten about it!

Re: Seller is requiring more postage

I did this just last week--didn't weigh a book and assumed I could post it for $5 as a large letter. But it weighed 800g and the cheapest post to Tas was a 3kg satchel.
My mistake and I wore the cost.

In another case, an express post option for $6.90 with zero extra for additional items, snuck onto  one of my listings. My usualy postage cost for this item was $7.50, plus $1.50 for additional.

A buyer bought 2 and chose the express post option--$6.90 instead of $9.

I mailed it std post before even noticing that EP was selected (it's not even really valid in my area--out in the sticks). I messaged the buyer to apologis ethat it was coming by regular post, and to let him know that express had snuck on, and he had saved $2.10 in postage.

He was so keen to pay back the $2.10 that he bought 2 more from me, wanting to add it on to the cost, but found he couldn't adjust it himself. I didn't want to charge him the extra (my mistake, again), and left it at that.

But as a buyer, I too would probably pay the extra if I thought the seller was inadvertently out of pocket.

Re: Seller is requiring more postage

Way to go jeni.

I buy vehicle parts from the UK and sometimes I notice the seller has paid more in postage.

On my next purchase I send a message asking them to add another 3-5 pounds onto postage from last time.

The way it should be IMO. Smiley Happy

Re: Seller is requiring more postage

This is a different thing, but related.

Some years ago I bought quite a bit of stuff from a U.K. seller in one hit before Christmas.

I'd bought dozens of things, no issue.

This one did not arrive. Nothing he had sent to Australia that week, did. He repaid me as soon as he heard from other buyers!

The packages were for Vic and Tasmania. All, disappeared.

He was so good about it I bought a lot more things I didn't really need, well after the Christmas danger time!

(all the parcels he'd sent were International Signed For)

I didn't doubt he'd sent it...but a few other buyers left negs. That was really uncalled for. I bet he treated them the same way he had treated me.

Just in case you come back to this post Jeni, maybe the Bx! boxes are an option for you?    If you buy 10 boxes (and the PO delivers them for free! which I always find amazing)  you can send 1kg anywhere in Australia for about $8.55 - a good alternative to the 3kg satchel.

Throughout this thread, I have felt a bit as if I have wandered into an alternative, genteel ebay world.

One where both buyers and sellers have been keen to make adjustments after the sale, to make sure everything is fair and square, so to speak.

All I can say is I don't think the people on these boards are totally representative of the wider community of ebay users.

In my selling days, I never had any buyer refund money on those occasions where we had underestimated it. If anything, it tended to go the other way, with occasional buyers asking why an item (such as a large snowsuit) was not sent in a 500g satchel when in fact the item was too big for even a 3kg satchel.

I think the key factor really is that sellers need to be on the ball, they need to set a selling price where they have a profit margin and they need to set a postage price that at least covers costs.

If they make a huge error & would be a lot out of pocket, they probably need to opt out of going ahead with the sale. A small error they should wear.

I know a seller may make an honest mistake but a bidder might only bid because the price is right. Even a dollar or two extra might push it up over what they wanted to pay.

🙂 I think those keen to make 'fair' adjustments are probably both buyers and sellers themselves - and you are right it might not be totally representative of all ebay users- there's prob more buyers around who give less than half price best offers lol

Thanks for the thought curraone.

You're right, it would have fitted in a BX2 box which would have been cheaper to post. I didn't have one so didn't even think of it!
