Seller scam got me ....

Hi all,

Looks like after 10 years on eBay Australia,  I've been scammed of a fairly large amount ($1000's) mainly by in too much of a hurry and greed.

Seller had 400+ positive feedback and long term ebay account.

Discussions prior to sale all seemed fine.

Won the auction, was asked for immediate payment by eBay.

Proceeded via eBay checkout where there were only two options for payment listed - cash on collection and bank transfer.

Believing I was protected, I went ahead and paid. Sellers instructions were to send copy of receipt, which I did.

Browsing Ebay listings some hours later, I noticed a closed listing for the same item - same pics, same script, but different State.

Messaged seller who claimed to know nothing about it.

Negative feedback on the closed listing mentioned "beware of fraud and don't send money"

No further contact from seller.

Ebay not helpful and claim due to payment method, no protection whatsoever.

However, Ebays own rules state that the category the item was listed in (electronics) is not allowed to offer Bank Transfer as a payment option ? Yet it was there at checkout and led me directly to the sellers BSB and Account Details ?

I understand the faultnwas mine for being stupid enough to use bank transfer in the first place, but do eBay accept and responsibility for making this form of payment possible at checkout on their site ?

Ive asked for sellers contact details, but nothing has been supplied by seller, or ebay.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or is Acorn my only likely option?

Immediately contact your bank and see if the bank transfer can be reversed. If the transaction has only just occurred, you may be lucky.

I won’t say anything further at the moment. I hope you can move like lightning.

Too late unfortunately. I couldn’t get through to the bank in tune. They told me payments leave the account every 15 minutes and unless you call within the hour, you have little chance of stopping it.
However, they’re trying anyway. They can’t give an answer or update for 6 weeks, minimum.

I have the same situation where I won an auction and the only option I had was to pay by bank transfer so I have done that and I'm now waiting for the item to turn up.

But I also contacted ebay and asked them why and how is a seller allowed to list without having a safe payment method?

CS didn't give me a straight answer to my question but only spun me a line of don't do business outside of ebay

What?

So it looks like sellers are now allowed to list without a safe payment method and all ebay recommends is that you don't buy from those sellers.

Not good enough in my opinion!

Yes they can, so long as they offer a payment method which gives buyer protection such as Paypal or EFTPOS. I presume it was the seller you've left the neg for, if so they did have AMEX as a payment method in the listing, that's how they were able to offer bank transfer.

Ok got it, yes they listed Amex as the other option. Yet as I mentioned, Ebay are quite clear that bank transfer can’t be used as a payment in the categories they specify?

I'm not sure where you've seen that policy, the only thing I've ever seen is that bank transfer can be used so long as a safe payment method is also offered.

Aren't they both in WA? Castletown & Marangaroo?

Lifted photos - same spelling errors.....red dot left for the 'other' seller, too!!!
