I've purchased a vintage bedspread which the seller described as being in excellent condition, however, when it arrived today I noticed multiple patches of what look to be old coffee stains or something similiar on it. I contacted the seller who has offered a partial refund of $8, but I am not really happy with this amount as I am unsure whether the stains can be removed through drycleaning. I love the bedspread and would prefer to keep it than pay close to $20 to return it, but feel that $8 is hardly an appropriate refund considering that it will cost substantially more to dryclean it and even then the stains may remain. What do you think would be a fair amount to ask for in discount, or am I being ridiculous and should just accept the $8? I know if I need to return it I must do it through paypal and use a tracked postage method.

As we know Reta, a lot of people think it is O.K. to sell items with stains, and undisclosed stains, on them ๐ก
They should have cleaned it. Maybe they did then thought it was fine..yes, yuk.
ooohhhh, you're a brave girl to be going there LOLOLOL
but to be fair, even dry cleaning doesn't always bring out all stains, so the item may have been cleaned iykwim...
but you would expect them to be mentioned in the listing at the very least.

So I went to the post office, and they quoted the exact same price to return the item as it cost the seller to ship (I kept the packaging) which is $15.35, and the cost of dry cleaning is $37. I have no idea if this is an expensive quote, but the item has no care tag due to its age so they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't be damaged in the dry cleaning process. If paypal allows me to return the item would I get my original postage charge back, or just the item charge? I understand that I need to pay for the return charge myself and that won;t be reimbursed.

Drycleaning can leave stains...so best to check with a reputable cleaner if something is stained before accepting part refunds for undisclosed stains.

A Paypal claim gives you a way to communicate too, you can leave comments.
The seller may offer to cover your return costs but they are not obliged to do so.
A cotton quilt depending on size, in clean to the eye condition (so no special treatment) costs a minimum of 25$ at my drycleaners.
So it does not sound too unreasonable. It would be more the worry of possible damage. I would send it back, personally.

Yeah, the dry cleaner also thought it looked like tea or coffee stains and indicated that they wouldn't necessarily come out. It's not small stains, but large patches exactly like if you spill a cup of coffee/tea, which is why I was never concerned they were from something else *coughs*. I'm torn because I love the pattern, but if I had known the item was as soiled as it is then I probably would have never bothered bidding.

If it is honestly described, people have an informed choice and can move on to the next listing.
It is a shame, hopefully you find something even nicer ๐ without issues

Exactly, and when you turn it over and the white pattern is dominant then there are even more marks showing up. I guess I should write back to the seller now and respectfully decline her offer and then put in an item not as described claim with paypal.
As far as the postage goes, the woman at the post office said the parcel postage option was trackable, but do I also need to have it registered or anything? I understand paypal, if they accept my claim, will tell me the address details, but is there anything else I should know?
