It's like anything else, you need to know your prices and shop around.
Sometimes the fault lies fairly and squarely with ebay buyers.
For instance, I have watched a lot of new tupperware items on auction. The price often start very cheap, but there have been a few times when I have seen the bidding go beyond the catalogue price.
Are the bidders mad? Don't they know they can see the RRP on the Tupperware site?
There are some good buys you can get though. For instance, I recently bought 50- 12mm diamante buckles (for wedding invitations) for about $39.95 plus postage. They were from a local seller, good quality and arrived really quickly.
I was one short and drove down to a nearby scrapbooking shop, where they were $2.20 each.
So you can get some good buys on ebay, just depends what it is and be selective.

I see this all the time, buyers paying more on eBay than they would pay in a retail shop.
I once listed a 2 year old "Dome" brand wine fridge. The guy who "won" the auction bid $50 over what he could have bought the thing brand new at Harvey Normans. I actually felt bad and sent him a message saying he should buy at Harvey's. Hew very grateful because not only was he going to pay more than retail but he was going to drive 200kms to pick it up from me!!
Do your homework.

The same thing happened to me once but it all back fired on me.A buyer won an item for way more than they should have so I sent them a message stating what happened and that I will cancel the transaction, next thing I get a message from them that they have reported me to Ebay for trying to cancel the transaction and that I need to go ahead with it otherwise they will be giving me a red dot for item not received.I then asked the buyer if they were serious they replied with yes I am serious so I said ok then no problem as soon as you pay I will send it,so it shows that some buyers do wish to pay way more but I'm not sure why they would pay more.
