Why can't I watch an item from the listing without having to open it?

this begs the question "Why would you want to watch an item if you haven't even opened the listing to read more about the item?"

Make sure you have selected this option to appear from the pull down view menu - customise - that appears next to the sort menu on the top right of search results.
