Why is it that when I specify a particular item I get lots of non related rubbish as well. for instance I was looking for a Canon 18-55mm lens and I got all these other lenses which I wasn't looking for.

If you want to be more specific use advanced search and use the include only these words and similar options. Search engines are notoriously unintuitive and ebay's is not one of the best.
