I used to buy lots of clothes off EBay but now 90% of the new listings in the women's clothing section seem to be from Chinese sellers who are giving bait and switches by using (stealing photos) from reputable stories such as sabo skirt, show pony, tiger mist etc and passing these photos off as their own as being their product.
Its only when you actually receive the real dress/whatever that you see how extremely horrible quality it is -misshapen,super cheap fabric, back stitching etc.
The ones you receive are usually so extremely poor quality that they make "regular poor quality" (eg:stuff from zara) look good!
I used to be able to avoid these sellers by clicking the "sellers from Australia only" box but now they have flooded this category too as they will claim that their item is in Australia when it isn't and they are actually based in China.
This is so prevalent in the sense that 90% of these "Chinese clothing photos" are false and many of them have extreme negative feedback-ie:not 10 or 20 but in the hundreds.
Reporting to EBay is futile as they won't do anything and will claim that they don't know the source of true origin of the photo.
This is just their excuse though, because if a buyer can tell they are counterfeit photos/not that stores then EBay staff should be able to.
The reality is they just don't want to do anything about it because EBay company greatly wants/values/relies on these sellers business.
The least they could do is force them to take real photos (on hangers or on floor and not stolen ones on people) with identifying factors but EBay won't as they don't care and are fine with customers to keep getting ripped off.
You can see some "real" listings from this country by clicking past page 1-5 and maybe starting from page approximately page 6 of the listings but why should I bother?
So now I don't buy any of my clothes anymore on EBay.
It would be good if many women started doing the same as a big "customer base loss" that affects them directly may be the only way that EBay will start caring.

It's probably fortunate for her that she doesn't look at EBay.
For the most part,I also have success when buying clothes online, except for the Iconic a few times as I noticed some of their sizes run small.
It seems to be primarily the sellers from china on eBay that are giving the bait and switch.
Also because their prices are low,not many people bother trying to get a refund etc and they survive because there is always another customer willing to take a chance and make a purchase and they have the full support of EBay (even though they use stolen photos) due to the business they give EBay.

Maybe we got lucky but I live in a tiny town with no easy access to fancy clothes. Last year my sister and I got invited to a wedding where the theme was formal long dresses. We were busy but since we had plenty of time before the wedding we decided to take a punt on cheap, Chinese, formal dresses, with the expectation that we might have to take some time to travel to the nearest city if the dresses were too bad to tweek with our poor sewing skills. We did check feedback and spent some time regaarding the fit and cloth of many dresses.
My god, these dresses not only fit perfectly, but were heavy fabric, fully lined, and a quality that we would expect from fashionable shops. We were gobsmacked. Both these dresses were under $80 and you would expect them to be at least a couple of hundred if you saw them in a shop. They were not from the same seller.
Goes to show that Chinese doesn't always mean **bleep**.

I was shocked a few years back to see exactly what you are describing happening on ebay. There were photos-exact same photos, stolen from the actual websites-of wedding dresses I had seen when I was out with my daughters as they tried on frocks.
The dead give away is the price. If you see a frock at $99 and know it is in the shops here for $2500, then I don't trust the $99 version ot be remotely the quality of the original. Not that we ever put it to the test.
But I have seen a few funny online blogs about Chinese frocks-what the photo showed, what the customer actually got!
Personally, I would prefer it if the default setting on ebay was that any time we did a search, it would search Australian only items, with international items only showing if you click that choice.
I don't buy clothing very often from ebay any more, unless it is kid's clothing for the grandkids and usually from a home seller in Aust. You can still get people who will advertise eg a new little suit, only worn once. Or sometimes good brand tops still with tags that their own children never got around to wearing. I find I have to read the ads carefully to get a sense of how legit the seller sounds etc & so far i haven't been disapppointed.
But for women's clothes, I have a couple of brands I occasionally order from on line but they have their own websites these days & own clearance lines so the prices beat any on ebay. Even so it can be hit & miss a bit unless you're careful what type of item you order. Anything really fitted I steer clear of but tops are usually okay.

So true! I love chop suey and all that tasty food but loathe what Turned-to-Bull has done. This is the problem when multi-millionaires are allowed to enter politics.
Also more cheap clothes to wade through when looking for something I like.

Well Lyndal, I think c_mount is 100% correct on he PM. But if you like I wont bag him any more. Thank goodness Howard isn't the current PM. Garden Gnome could be a well used term. ....
.....
On the serious side, I feel for the people in China and other countries having to make a life for themselves. It's horrendous over there and I have mixed feelings about the importation which is damed for you if you do and damed for them if you don't.
