my mum and i were on ebay looking for cupboards and things and she found one she liked. she clicked on buy now but that was as far as it went. it was not "purchased" or payed for or anything. when reading the description it had details about shipping only when she clicked on buy now it said pick up only. (we dont live in that state and can not pick it up). as well as this she went into her bank account and discovered she can not pay and therefore no longer wanted the item. i had not realised that the item had been listed as purchased ( to me its not purchased until A) it has been confrimed and B) you have paid for it, after that is logical )
a got an email from the seller asking that if i did not wish to have the item then to advise her. i did this and apolagised for the confusion. i have not heard back from the seller and have had emails from ebay saying that a case has been opened and my account may be suspended. what do i do about this and how can i stop my account from being suspended. am i missing something?

The seller can in fact change a dispute from a NPB to a cancellation. It is not possible to go the other way though
I stand corrected-my 1st mistake for today :^O

Unfortunately I get a lot of non-payers so I spent a lot of time in the 'resolution centre' ๐

It must have been confirmed and it is definitely sold before you pay for it.
If you don't want to pay the freight charge then you will just have to cop the unpaid item strike.
What you should do is either pay in full with the delivery charge or offer to compensate the seller for wasting their time if they will agree to a mutual cancellation.
They probably asked you if you still wanted it or not as they would have given you more time to pay if you did but as you said you didn't want it they went ahead and opened the dispute as 4 days must already have been wasted.

As has been said for an item to have been purchased both the buy it now button and commit to buy button must have been pushed.
As a seller, and like Kaz, with regular unpaid item cases/cancellation requests to deal with on a regular basis, I thought I would mention that as soon as you commit to buy an item ebay instantly charge a final value fee to the seller's account on the assumption that the item has sold and the seller will get paid. This is because the sale is considered binding.
If, for any reason, you cannot go ahead with a sale you should contact the seller immediately and let them know. If they agree to a mutual cancellation then you should confirm you wish to cancel as soon as you receive the request. The reason for this is that the seller cannot get the fees paid for the sale credited to their account until you do so, and secondly it will allow the seller to relist the item or make a second chance offer. While the sale is in limbo, the seller is potentially out of pocket for the final value fees and can also miss out on selling the item to another buyer.
Finally if you buy an item of which there is only 1 listed for sale, the seller may be out of pocket the relisting fee.
It is wise to ask questions before buying anything.

Rule for the future... ALWAYS pay by PayPal. that way if there is a dispute they will handle it.
Always KNOW how much money you have in the bank before pressing any buttons :^O
Be very very sure that all is as it should be before you jump in. Any doubts at all contact the seller and ask.
This is a little different from buying in a shop, there is far more to take into consideration than just seeing something you like and pressing buttons.
Read carefully every little bit of information and always treat the seller with care and respect as you hope to be treated the same way ๐

One thing I have noticed happening lately (and it is only slightly related to the OP) is that if you click on the 'buy' button and then use the browsers back button without confirming (say to read the details etc more carefully) and then click 'buy' again, and confirm the 2nd time, it will come up as having purchased two of the item.
Just something to be mindful of.
