If you don't get your item you should be able to open a dispute.....depending on how you paid. If it was bank transfer then you are out of luck.
If you are not expecting it till October It sounds like it is coming from overseas. What sort of item is it? If it is an item that is likely to be scammed and you paid by bank deposit I don't like your chances.

Buying as a guest lets you shop on eBay without registering as an eBay member. You can purchase some items using Buy It Now, and you can see your order details by following the link in your confirmation email. On the order details page you can see your purchased items, check delivery status and tracking numbers or report that you didn't receive an item.
How it works
You can buy without an eBay account when:
The price of the item is less than AUD $6,000
The seller has a Feedback score of five or higher and a positive rating of 98% or better
You purchase the item using Buy It Now
You pay for the item using PayPal or credit card (your credit card information won't be shared with the seller)
If you decide to register when buying your item, it's easy – just choose a password at the end of the checkout process.

It is just as well it was the only one the seller had.
At least you can see that the order went through as the book is now out of stock....if you had bought from your account as well as the guest account you would have bought 2 copies.
If it is coming from the USA is it coming via the GSP? If so, you need to know it will probably be a long wait as it is a very slow service.

Sorry, I have no idea....I have never used the guest option for either ebay or paypal.
However, I do know that there has been a problem with paypal notices going missing for days or even weeks before arriving.
Ring paypal tomorrow and ask them about the payment...it may be a bit difficult if you don't know who the seller is but worth a try.

To add to what Lyndal said, in future, use your account. It makes life so much easier! There is no point using a guest account if you have a registered account and I can't really understand why anyone would.
If the payment won't be cleared until tomorrow, then of course the seller won't have posted it yet, so won't have marked it as posted. Remember, when it's Monday here, it's still Sunday over there, so don't panic if you don't see any action tomorrow.
If the seller is a large volume seller, it may take a couple of days to post it. If it's coming via Global Shipping it could take a couple of weeks before it actually leaves the US (it would have said in the listing if it was coming via GSP, but you may not have seen it if you're not sure what you're looking for).
The estimated dates in the listing are exactly that, estimates. They are not guarantees. They are eBay's fabrication of how long they think it takes. In reality, it's often longer, so don't go blaming the seller if it's not here by the estimated date. The seller has no control over those dates.
You should be able to find the listing by putting the title in the search box and refining the search to sold listings.
If it turns out it's way past the estimate date and you're not sure what to do, pop back in here for advice on how to proceed. One last thing, if you're accessing this page on a mobile device, add the persons name you're replying to, otherwise no-one is sure who the reply is for. When using the mobile site, every reply is directed at the poster of the first post (the OP). It can get confusing.
