Most small parcels cost about that in postage nowadays.
The seller usually has to quote a postage rate and for all they know, someone interstate might bid so it has to be a rate that will cover that, not just a local rate.
Plus as others have mentioned, sellers get charged a commission not only on the sale but on the postage costs.
You're treating the whole procedure as if this were a friend posting you something. A friend might charge you only the exact postage cost but in a business, they are entitled to cover postage & packaging. Plus a lot of sellers send things with tracking.
Think about it. If you were a seller, wouldn't you want to cover all your expenses and time and effort? Possibly the seller should have just bumped up the overal price of the item. Ask yourself-was the total price still better than what you usually get it for in the shops? If so, it wasn't a bad deal and if you don't like it you don't have to buy from her again.
You knew the score before you bid.

I charge postage to the cost but many buyers still leave low scores for postage because they feel as though I could have sent it in a cheaper less secure packaging, well I won't ever be doing that. And if a buyer doesn't like this then don't buy it,simple as that, don't start complaining after the fact.

@phorum_junkie* wrote:Forget about the petrol to go to the PO, that is not an allowable postage cost . Ebay allows a seller to charge for the actual postage cost plus the cost of packaging materials and for the time taken to locate and prepare the item for posting, not for actually posting it. Anything else should be added to the item price if the seller wishes to recoup that costs.
..
sage advice
"Anything else should be added ( included into) to the item price if the seller wishes to recoup that costs."
When you buy an item that advertises a postage element do you add that and the item price together and then pay?
I include a petrol levy, hot chip tax, toll fees, ugly buyer offset allowances and a Schooner surcharge in with all my
postage costs.....even if I do not buy them when I go to town or separate them on the invoice.
Of course it's allowed.....
It's called working within ebays policy parameters.... unless of course you believe in drop bears, sky hooks, striped paint,
left handed nails or that free postage is really free.

A basic store has been $19.95 pm since May 2013
