top rated sellers

I am a little bemused at the top rated seller criteria, I have just had a rather dissapointing transaction with a seller who is listed as a top rated seller by Ebay yet he has over 1300 negative feedback scores, I understand that due to the amount of sales this person has made that it is a percentage but with this many negatives, and they are mostly very nasty negatives, how can we be expected to trust that we will have a positive experience.

I guess I should have checked the sellers feedback prior to buying from them but when I saw TOP RATED SELLER I assumed that they would be trustworthy.

So far all I have from the seller is send me a photo so I can find the person responsible, I received three of five items paid for so I fail to see how finding the person responsible helps me get my missing items, I don't really care who is responsible, I just want what I paid for.

I hope that those in charge see this and do something to ensure that sellers like <Removed> can't be a top rated seller with such poor feedback, a case has been opened to try and get the items sent or money refunded but I am not holding my breath.

Re: top rated sellers

i get what your saying however you are proof the feedback system will work if a buyer uses it before buying.

i nearly allways look at a sellers feedback prior to pressing the 'buy' button.

with this seller i'd make the decision do i trust a seller with over 1300 negatives, partlicularly if they are nasty ones.

i'd prolly close his listing and move along to someone else.

i would only use such a seller if he was the only seller with something i needed and if it turned out badly it wasn't a huge problem.

Re: top rated sellers

I have found over the time that F/back here is NOT working, NOT a reliable measure/guide in deciding who to buy from - and for the best part not woth the paper it's written on.

To use it as a gospel, be totally guided by it - F/back would need to be truthful and factual, not just someone's "opinion", and even a downright lie!

And we all know that is not the case with Ebay's f/backs

There was even articles in various national press about   futility on being gueded by them when shopping - as they are primarily dished out to sellers as a revenge, not to enlighten other shoppers.

I said it before, and here it is again:

If we all paid any mind to them - no one would ever sell anything else after getting a neg.  f/back  - which is clearly not the case.

And another anomaly I have found - the nastier the wording in the f/back the more abscence of that "ring of truth" there is!

And we are all suposed to blindly follow their "opinions" - and don't buy anything from those sellers - it's almost like a religion, a blind faith.

And finally, what can actually go wrong, after all is said & done.

All payments are covered by Ebay as well as PP (those that were paid with PP), and the worst thing that would happen is getting the money back and a bit of wasted time. But claims for refund can just as easy be from anyone, not reserved for sellers with heaps of negs!

Re: top rated sellers

I hope when you opened the dispute you opened one for item not as described rather than item not arrived. If you used the latter and the seller sent with tracking, then you will lose the dispute if the tracking says delivered.

I don't know who your seller is, but I can only assume it's a high volume Chinese seller. It's a good reminder to always check feedback and be careful who you buy from. After checking feedback, then you can make a choice whether you want to buy or not. I buy from sellers who have had negs. Often the negs are vindictive and don't truly show how the transaction went. Some buyers leave negs purely because they can. Sometimes buyers leave a negative with a positive comment. I think that sometimes happens when they click the dot for a positive, then use their down arrow to try and scroll down. Using the down arrow will move the dot.

If the negs are from obviously difficult buyers, then I won't hesitate to buy from them. However, if they have bad feedback for poor performance, I'll think long and hard as to whether I'll buy from them. It depends on what it is that I'm buying. I also base my decision on how a seller replies to a negative. If the buyer gave a neg for an item that wasn't received and the seller replies with an abusive message calling them a scammers, liar, thief or disguise swear words, I won't buy from them. Bad replies reflect badly on a seller. I don't want to be abused if something goes wrong with a transaction.

A high volume seller with a lot of negs like that can still keep their TRS status. If they have sold a million items in the last 12 months, then 1,300 isn't an unreasonable amount. Especially if they sell cheap items. Generally speaking, high volume sellers of low priced items, especially the Chinese, tend to get a lot of negs. Buyers buy cheap stuff for a couple of dollars and expect a high quality item. Then they get upset when it's not.

Re: top rated sellers

I would agree with tippy.

I do take notice of feedback, but not every bit of feedback.

Fixnwear is right. A more abusive buyer is probably less likely to be as useful as a buyer who makes an objective statement.

So you have to sift through feedback a bit. I've even seen neg feedback work in a seller's favour, where you can see the buyer is dipsy yet the seller has given a calm, sensible response.

I think if I didn't get part of an order, and didn't get anywhere with a seller, I would probably make a not as described claim.

As for the top rated seller bit. I assume ebay just gives that to any company that has hundreds and hundreds of sales, it doesn't mean they don't ever have any problems. In fact I think sometimes the products are just as good if not better from the small sellers.
