why do some sellers not bother to leave feedback

Hi Gordon, there have been a number of threads on this recently including a long one in the last few days. Some of the reasons include

1) Its voluntary and so some cant be bothered

2) Some sellers are annoyed that ebay only allow Pos. feedback to be left for buyers, completly de-valuing the system as a true   reflection of buyers history. ( if a buyer does the wrong thing sellers are not allowed to mention it ). Feedback simply becomes a public count of number of items purchased and not an accurate record of their behaviour during the transaction.

3) Some sellers have automated systems that rely on the buyer leaving Pos. feedback to trigger response

4) Many sellers and buyers "just want to sell & buy stuff" without getting involved in all of ebays silly little schemes

5) Many other sales sites dont have feedback so its not a standardised thing in online sales

There are many other reasons but these seem to be the common ones.

My own opinion is that feedback for sellers is a valuable and reasonably accurate record of their past history and usefull in deciding who to trade with. Feedback for buyers in its current form is a fairly meaningless list of smiley stamps that has been de-valued tremendously by ebay feedback policy. I dont support the re-introduction of negative feedbacks being left by sellers for buyers, but believe an automatically generated neutral for slow payers & negative for no payers would go a long way to re-building trust and fairness into the system..

why do some sellers not bother to leave feedback

When i first started buying stuff on eBay & sellers didn't leave fb after posting,i used to think there was something a bit suss about them, maybe something wrong with the item etc.

Now i understand that the sale isn't finished for the seller until the buyer receives the item & leaves fb saying that they are happy with it.A few things can go wrong between payment & delivery that can go wrong which can be out of the sellers control.

Also, sellers get sick of leaving fb for buyers who just don't bother leaving it.Whatever,it's a flawed silly system which will always be a problem the way eBay is running it.

I don't mind leaving fb after i get the item & it's very hard for a seller to get less than 5 stars for everything from me.

As a seller,if people leave fb,i'm happy that they are polite & leave it for them.Simples.

As a buyer I leave feedback within 48 hours of when I receive the item.

As a seller I wait for the buyer to leave feedback so I know that buyer is happy, then I leave the buyer feedback.

On 1 ID In the last 12 months I have had 48 feedbacks with 24 buyers not leaving feedback, of which 4 people can still leave feedback (going back to July 10).

On my 2nd ID in the last 12 months I have 31 buyers who haven't left feedback, of which 4 people can still leave feedback (going back to June 24).

Last year the numbers were a lot worse.

Funny you should mention that. I checked my feedback stats earlier and was suprised to see a similar trend. I run two stores. Six months ago I would be lucky to recieve feedback for 40% of my sales on both. My smaller store is running at around 52% of transactions recieving feedback & the larger one nearly 60% which is the highest for a long time. I have automated systems which leave Pos. for my clients after they leave the same for me.

This.

Genuine question (as I don't use a smart phone), is the process of leaving feedback much more difficult

via phones/devices? I have noticed buyers don't leave feedback like they used to. Is it that manners went

out with the dinosaurs or is it technically more difficult to do these days and gets ignored/put in too hard

basket. (and yes I know it is voluntary but it was also voluntary back in the 90s so what has changed?)

No actually it is easier from a iPhone or iPad. When leaving stars they start out as just an outline of a star when you tab on them the fill with colour. Very easy to see how many stars you are leaving.

I don't think it's anything to do with manners or how difficult/easy it is to leave feedback. I think it's more to do with buyers not seeing feedback as important anymore, until something goes wrong with a purchase.

You only have to look at some of the posts about the scam sellers to see that many buyers do not even check feedback prior to making a purchase.

I just have to ask the same question I askalmost every time I see this type of question.

As a buyer why do you feel the need to receive feedback? All it is is a record of how many items you have bought from sellers who leave feedback. A bit like peacock tail feathers, do you feel the need to display your buying capacity to other members>
